CATCH-UP-CORNER ...JUNE...WEEK 1... It's just WET!!!

Pinch Punch first of the month!

Hello running friends … here we are. JUNE 1st. Ain't that a surprise. This year, for me, seems to be whizz, whizz, whizzing!

I am certainly whizzing, that is for sure!

It has been a really busy day here for me... BUT...The cushions are out, the sun is still shining and the snacks and drinks are plentiful... some new recipe protein snacks made today and for MissUnderstanding . a small but tasty, almond croissant!

May was a month and a half, though.. full of ups and downs, runs here and runs there, and weather that did not seem to know what to do with itself. We had, here in the Moorlands... the full range. Everything from, hot to cold, wet to dry, gales, thunder , rain and hail...it was unsettled !

Now... I shall remember, mostly, May, weather wise , for the lack of sunshine, and of course, the endless, relentless, seemingly ever-present... RAIN! I am, or have been, usually, an optimist, accepting what comes, and seeing the positive elements are there.

BUT... the rain ! I know we need the rain, I know the benefits, I know we should see the wonderful benefits of rain compared with those countries which are desperate for it. BUT... !

So, imagine my surprise, when I discovered on one of my rambling, research routes, I came across a HUGELY interesting fact. Being outside in the rain can make us, wait for it... Happier and healthier !

I kid you not... and yes, scientists have discovered, that rain can make us happy and improve our mental health.

Having discovered this amazing fact, I explored more and wow... what a lot I found out.

Okay.. the science bit... from a BBC meteorological study...”When it rains, molecules are released into the air and some become negatively charged ions. When we inhale them, it is thought they can help to relieve stress and even boost our energy levels.”

Research is taking place into the effects of negative ions, but it is thought they may boost our mood, relieve stress and give us more energy. Okay!

The scientists believe that there is much to be discovered in the fact that being exposed these negative ions is really beneficial.. the cleaner air after rain, that unmistakable scent in the air, mentioned only recently by one of our runners and the way that smell, called petrichor, from the Greek words petra, meaning "stone", and ichor, meaning "the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods impacts us so positively.

No one really understands it, but research goes on!

So! Running in the rain? I feel many, many, many of us have done that ...but, did we realise how good it was for us? I know I thought about a lot...but mostly, how wet I was!

Basically... and I have gathered a lot of info and putting it into a sort of nutshell,

The benefits of running in the rain:

Running is the rain can feel so, so liberating... like being a child again!

* Stress, the relief of:

The calm, the soothing sounds, the scent and the sensations...our stress levels reduce and we feel more at ease.

* Boosting your mood

This happens in most weather conditions, and as we know. that is because exercise releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural mood-boosters.

* Mindfulness

Running in the rain can focus us wonderfully, running in the moment, and we have had posts about this before. Having an awareness if our surroundings, taking time as we run gently, to absorb the sights and sounds whilst feeling and the sensations in our body.

* Character building:

Apparently running in the rain can make us tough! It does help to build resilience and mental toughness. It may feel hard, but the effort of running maybe through heavy torrential rain and even a headwind, will strengthen us and make sunny, runny days, feel wonderfully, easy!

* Touching Nature ;

So we need to say more... we know how the wonders of the great outdoors, are so beneficial... and running in the rain does not diminish, but rather enhance that; a real connection with the world around us. This in turn release the feeling so calm, and ease and relaxation. Yes, even whilst running.

The disadvantages?

We get WET :) ( But we do dry out:)

Okay, there we are... food for thought, whilst heading on the C25K route... using the wetness, to fuel the happiness in our runs.

I have had some very, very, very wet runs... but, I am, going to try to focus more, when I next do one, on the positive benefits of that run ! Interestingly, Mr OF has just said to me whilst we were discussing this subject, that when I get in from a very wet run, I am buzzing, exhilarated and glowing ! Who would have thought it !

Your turn to share now... C25K-ers... and all our other running friends; have any wet runs slowed you down or put you off. Do you go out for a planned run if it is raining... I don't really like to do that... don't mind if I am out there though. What about you, do you go or not?

We are here, and waiting to see , wet or dry, who pops in to chat...this evening or tomorrow :)

Hi Oldfloss and running friends, hope you’re all getting out there and doing whatever you can 👍

I’ve never had a problem with running in the rain, but I’m not a fan of strong winds, even if it’s a tailwind!

Anyway, back to running in the rain: I always a have a look at the weather forecast before going out, hoping to make sure I’m as prepared as I can be. Even so, of course sometimes I’ve been caught out in horrendous rain over the local flyover. Once you’re soaking wet you can’t get any wetter after all, so you might as well carry on! It’s never bothered me that I’m absolutely dripping wet when I get home, there’s always time for a quick warm shower 🙂

It would be nice if we could have a bit of drier weather now that meteorological summer has arrived - we seem to have had so much rain this last winter and spring. Perhaps we might be heading for a hose pipe ban? 🤔 If so, I’m sure we’ll cope with that too 😊

Hi David, you are very welcome!

I'm not surprised that the rain does not put you off... you are a heck of a runner! Wind yes!!! Eeek... it is windy here this morning, so I am waiting for the sun to break through before heading out!

Interesting that you do check out the forecast too.. forewarned is forearmed eh? Getting caught in. it, yes, I feel sure most of us in the UK, must have? And you sound like you have got very wet at times !

Wet, really is, just wet and when you are wet... as you say.. that is it. I don't mind that so much, as wet and cold... that combination is not one I enjoy!

A good spell of dry would be so good... it is the up and down that is getting to many of us... and I am sure you are completely correct, we will be into hosepipe bans and water conservation and I'll be chuntering on about running in the heat, then, maybe... :)

Thank you so much for popping in.. you are welcome here, any time:)

I absolutely love running in the rain...weirdly enough...i hate walking in it though.running in it doesn't bother me one little bit.some of my best runs have been done in the rain 🤩

Hello and welcome to the corner, snacks and smoothies all readily available!

It is brilliant, that you love the rain running and knowing all those benefits too ! It can feel very, very exhilarating.... so good toot that your great runs are wet ones too... we do have our fair share of rainfall !

Walking in the rain... well I don't mind it...having done a lot of it in Wales... but as my Nan used to say, with the right clothing, there is no such thong as bead weather. For me, my wide brimmed cap is my wet weather, ( and any other weather ) essential !

Do you wear particular wet weather clothing? or just get very wet?

Thank you so much for popping on and sharing your thoughts... you are welcome here, any time:)

I just get very wet!!!then enjoy getting home in the warm & drying off.i tend to get very warm when I run & I find that wearing a waterproof running jacket just makes me feel hot & wet on the inside so I might as well just feel refreshed & wet on the outside instead 👍

I just get very wet & enjoy getting warm & dry when I get home.i tend to get really hot when I'm running so I don't actually like waterproof running jackets as they just get all warm & wet on the inside anyway so I might as well just get wet from the rain & feel refreshed

Sounds good to me.. although my Ron Hill lightweight does not make you sweaty and hot... it is great for light showers.

Hi Oldfloss. Well for me I’m afraid it’s a case of if I open the door all ready kitted out for my run and it’s raining then I don’t go ! However if it’s just a wee drizzle I might risk it and if it starts raining while I’m already out running then I just get on with it and it’s then and only then that I don’t mind running in the rain especially if it’s a hot day and we have a thunderstorm.

There you are I think I’ve covered all options 🤣🤣🤣………anymore hot chocolate over there please ?🥰xx

Good morning.. welcome ! I am a bit like you.. unless it is a race... I will stay home. Plenty of exercise to do indoors! A drizzle, maybe:)

But you don't mind it if you are out, so... you ARE getting all the wonderful benefits... it does sound like a real winning combination doesn't it?

Plenty of fresh hot chocolate here this morning... it is sunny but a tad breezy today... so sit a while and relax and thank you for popping in.x

The first May Day was horrendous started running again on 14/04/24 and it’s a well known fact Ed I don’t run in the rain in our running club! They were shocked when I turned up in the pouring rain to do my week 3 run 1! Having done C25K I should embrace the rain but given the option I would prefer not! We did our run by the end we were soaked nothing was dry! On the Thursday run it was summer for a day which lead to a warm but muddy trail run! Certainly was very changeable weather

Well, I asked about how to plan for wet weather running in organised races a while back and was so pleased I did. I got plenty of practical tips and support. I'm now a veteran at wet weather race running! 😂

And, I LOVE it!

I didn't know about some of science you've mentioned, but one big advantage for me is that I get really hot when I'm running and rain helps keep me cool!

I take spare trainers and top to keep in the car for the journey home. And I've invested in some rain resistant tops and leggings so I don't really seem to get that wet. I'm so pleased I got some tips here and took "the plunge"!

Just fabulous and than you for calling in... I have clearly had glitches and have only just got these replies!!!

Rain running clearly holds no fears for you and you are clearly benefitting from it. You are very well organised as well and I can just imagine you in your wet races... doing absolutely brilliantly!!!!

Wonderful! x

I’m a bit late to this catch up chat.. as I’m on holiday in the Lakes.. just back from a VERY wet climb up to Stickle Tarn.. I may post about it, or the whole holiday, in a day or two. Just had to reply as this post is so on point for us this week. We have had a very good mix of sunshine and rain, on our long walks and climbs. The rain today definitely slowed us down, but it was the wind at the tarn (see photo) that stopped us from going higher and tackling the actual mountain.. we took the sensible option, retraced our steps and we are both relieved now to be back in the warm cottage, aching slightly, but yes, energised, mentally at least, by the whole experience!

Hello! I am only just getting these replies through and playing catch up!! Welcome in all the way from the Lakes!

You are getting first hand the effects of weather and wind too! It sounds fairly tough...Looking at that photograph where the feeling of rain and chill really shows... gosh! Taking the sensible option definitely the right choice and time to warm up and rest too !

But yes that zingy, tingly buzz after a wet blustery outing can be really exhilarating, you are quite right...amazing!

thank you so much for calling in and I am looking forward to your post!! xx
