Hello everyone. Here I am again !

The coffee is on, the juice and smoothies are chilled, and the fresh snacks are out... I have a new banana cake recipe and some wonderful pastries too !

Grab your cushion and sit right down!

How is everything going for all of you!

I am feeling running happy right now... as yesterday, on my repeat journey of C25K after time out, I completed Week 5 ! First frost of the year, but a gloriously sunny day! The longer runs beckon and feel very welcome for me. I am sticking to the plan and not pushing myself to move any faster than the programme states:) It was a frosty, glorious run!

Now... where I live, there are a few small lakes and ponds on the huge estate that is not too far a way from me... and on those lakes... there are a fair few Canada Geese. WE call them, The Lads!

This week whilst Mr OF and I were out, we spotted a huge skein of the Canada Geese, stretched across a sunlit sky and it got me thinking, ( oh no), about a post I wrote a while back!

I am going to use that post again now... with a few additions !

Nature and the creatures in it can teach us many things, about many things.

The Geese, surprisingly, to me anyway, are no exception.

Not overly speedy on the land, ( a bit like me really), indeed, they may appear to cut a slightly comical picture, (unless they are chasing you) ! But when some of the more well known larger varieties of geese take off.... wow...the power, the strength, the determination and the stamina of those geese, is awesome.

I was musing, that it is a tad like we runners, and that led me on to find a bit more out about these creatures; and as I did so, the common features that we , in our running forums here, share with them is really interesting.

So...I'm just going to list a few things that geese are really good at... and leave you to draw your own conclusions about them and us and our running!

* Geese fly further when flying together. Each bird providing , with its wings, uplift for their fellow birds. Team work at all times, ( Supporting each other to reach a common goal).

* Other geese will remain by the side of a goose that is sick or injured. Offering help and protection through those tricky times.( Supporting each other when on the IC).

* Taking turns and giving support to each other, no one bird, leading or out ahead all the time; each bird showing its own individual strengths. ( No comparison between ourselves and any other runner).

* Remaining loyal to their progress, following the same migration route and finishing all together in the same place, ( Following the C25K programme and finishing at that podium).

* Honking to each other through the flight. Encouragement and communication at all times to keep each other going, especially when some of the flock are tiring. ( Posting here, reading the posts, replying to the posts offering advice, tips and support. Literally cheering each other on).

Now, you may at this point that I am completely loopy.... but it is really interesting and it really did make me think about us, running, and about us here on the forum.

We start out, maybe feeling very unsure and lacking in confidence, but coming onto the forum, becoming part of this running family, we are immediately strengthened.

There is always someone in front of us, ( with advice and tips), someone behind us, ( whom we can help with our own tips and advice), and always someone by the side of us, ( sharing our experiences and in turn sharing their own).

How great to be part of this!

There are many new beginners , feeling a tad uncertain and not sure of the way? Well you are, certainly, in the right place here.

There have been some incredible posts too, this last week, with many, many of you reaching that destination of Graduation, ( ready to fly on to new destinations now), but still with support.

Some folk on the Injury Couch, but still receiving support and encouragement from all the posts and replies, on here.

More than a few, who have followed this plan before, have joined us too; they know the way and they know the invaluable support and the wealth of knowledge within the forum.

I do know from my own issues over the last few months, since Mr OF had his heart attack, just how much strength I draw from my fellow runners. The support they give freely and unconditionally, has kept me flying... ! Reading your posts alone is motivation in itself, and have helped me so much as I build back to my running health. Thank You x

So wherever we are on C25K, we may in reality, be on our own when we run, but we, because of this forum are never, ever alone !

Please, do pop into the Corner when you get a few minutes, we all want to hear what's happening with you. ! Plus, you may have some Geese tales too!

I think my painting of rainbow geese, is quite apt here:)

Thank you for calling in today... A bird watcher... well those geese are a tad more colourful than the normal ones ...

So interesting when I was finding out about geese... I do quite literally look at them in a completely different way now! Sit a while and maybe a few more folk will drop in and share their running and their geese tales!

Yes.. that run was so welcome... the legs are getting stronger and eager to run more but I am following the plan, exactly by the book! It felt so good though... and with no struggle either:)

Stay a while and just relax x

Your painting is just perfect for this post. I have waddled in to sit in the corner and knit, but I won't stay long because I'm off out with my neighbour to decide if I'm safe and legal to drive, it's soon but I need to know as been informed it could be some months before I have new glasses, ๐Ÿ˜„

It is bitter here today... I shall run Wednesday I think... I always need an extra rest day after a Monday workout with small runner in training!

๐Ÿ I am delighted to sit a wee while & enjoy the banana cake & some coffee! Such a fun painting & I so loved the analogy to running. Being here in Canada we are at the moment watching the flocks take off for warmer destinations to escape the bitter winter still to come. Spectacular v formations and loud honking!

I have so enjoyed my Autumn runs & the freedom to pick and choose 30 mins guided runs. Yesterday the cooler wet weather was broken by Chinook winds and we have glorious sunshine back again. I am going to try a slightly longer distance for one of my runs this week at my glorious snail pace.

Lovely to touch base with you all for a while but sadly now I must fly out again ๐Ÿคฃ as we have a busy day planned. Thanks for your hospitality Floss! Xx

Yes...the banana cake is very tasty! It is good to see you and thank you for taking time out of your holiday.

Oh gosh yes, I forgot you would be seeing whole flocks of them there... just wonderful... You have had some beautiful runs whilst you have been there and we have seen the photographs too, equally beautiful! I hope you do get a longer run done tomorrow... it sounds as if it is going to be lovely and relaxed!

Thank you for flying in :) and do enjoy the rest of your holiday xxx

Oh banana cake, yes please, and is there any Earl Grey tea too? Or is that too much to ask. The geese reminds me of a Spring holiday in the Outer Hebrides where so many geese were still there over wintering. A glorious sight and so many different kinds. A birders paradise ๐Ÿชฟ. Happy running ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

OldflossAdministratorGraduateโ€ข in reply toSax64

A glorious sight indeed. Thank you for calling in... yes, Earl Grey and a few other choices too!

Your holiday sounds just wonderful... I love to see the geese when I happen on them on any runs...they don't take much notice of me at all!

Stick around a while and rest... hopefully a few more folk will pop in to chat! Happy Running indeed!

That's all so lovely about the geese! We had some migratory geese every year near a river at home, and I always loved seeing them come... And when we would go for walks there, one would always stand and clap its wings and they'd all walk.... (Waddle? That seems a bit rude!) to the far side of the field to get away from these human intruders!

I'm just in from W8 R2... Just finished in time before some rain! Had a bit of a surprise between when I did run 1 last week and run 2 today... A genetic heart issue was picked up... Anyway I'm fine now but just it raises my risk of heart problems and strokes later on... So I'm still getting my head around it, but so glad that I'm back running again and hopefully I'll keep my heart in good shape as long as I can despite it

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduateโ€ข in reply toRunningJ123

Hello and welcome.. take a cushion :)

Yes, fascinating facts and they are really quite extraordinary! Your geese sound wonderful ! Yes.. waddle does seem a tad rude doesn't it... but maybe they were chilled and relaxed when I painted them?

Oh gosh... yes.. I bit of a shock but... if it helps, I had similar... ages ago, in the age of Well Woman checks at the GP surgery...Not a condition, but genetic risk on the Paternal side, meant my risk factor was raised... for heart disease... which is one reason that I keep running and keep myself as fit as I am able.. I was shocked... as although in my 60s then, with a fitness age of 34... that the genetic link raised the risk.

Doing what you are doing, is I feel the right thing and my GP currently still echoes that... keep fit, keep sensible and keep running!

So... you do what you are doing and try not to worry ..once your rationalise things you may find that the positives far outweigh the negative.:)

Meantime... well done on that lovely run...before the rain ! Sit awhile longer, rest and relax and know you are on the right track xxx

Banana cake eh? That reminds me of my childhood favourite bake of my Mumโ€™s. Does it come with lemon icing and silver balls? Drool!

I โ€˜ve not run again since my difficult Parkrun on Saturday, as my feet and ankles hurt, so Iโ€™m giving them a rest until I can get home to the flat lands of Hampshire!

I expected to feel guiltier than I do! But Iโ€™ll be back out on Friday morning, I promise, miss!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduateโ€ข in reply toBarbieW

Hello and welcome... It can have any topping that you wish for!

Oh gosh... feet and ankles... eeek.... There are quite a few exercises on the S and F Forum for those two bits of you! It sounds as if the PR may have been a hill too far, but you did really well and have done all holiday! Maybe you will miss the hills when you return home? :)

I think easing back is a great idea... and you should not feel guilty at all! You have done some great runs and now you can sit back on the cushions.. munch on the banana cake and know that the flatlands are waiting... just for you :)

I shall watch for your post on Friday.... thanks for popping in x

Hello Old Friend

I graduated some time ago but check in with the forum from time to time. I just had to comment on your beautiful post as it resonated with my present experience of running with a local group.

I joined the group 6 weeks ago, feeling nervous and unsure. The nerves got worse when I saw the age of the runners in the group. I was the oldest in the group by about 20years!

Gradually the group became a family and we all motivated each other. A whats app group was created and everyone shared their highs and lows, just as a family would.

Last week as the light was fading on the run, one group member ran alongside me sharing the light from her phone.

We are now a running group, how fast or slow doesnโ€™t seem to matter. Just getting everyone to the end is more important.

Runners are united by an invisible bond๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Good morning!

How really lovely to see you here again... and thank you so much for dropping in... I need to get a cushion saved for you!

This is so useful and so relevant as you say! The group you have joined sound very inclusive and friendly... you have grown together and what a wonderful atmosphere to run in... to share our love for our runs with like minded folk is very special.

You are so right, when you say that we are untied by an invisible bond... reading the posts on the forums this weekend demonstrates that wonderfully.

Your words have been particularly timely for me... I met a lady, another runner, at the end of my Sunday run. We started chatting, as you do, and she invited me to go along, to a small local group who meet together not too far from me. All levels and doing their own thing too... located at a small running track... at a local business firm.. * track will be new for me*, and after the session they are all invited back to one of the runner's farms for coffee and cake!

I have been a bit dithery, because I am, as you know a lone runner...but reading your reply... I am going to head along. I will probably be the oldest there, but age, in running, really is just a number!

So thank you so much for this... please do stay awhile and let us know what you are up to on the main forum too:) x

Thank you OF please always have a cushion for me as I will never stray far from the forum and friends that supported me on my initial running journey. For me it is like returning home. Please do join the group, you can both inspire others and be inspired. Have fun ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

I love your painting Oldfloss!๐Ÿฅฐ Mary Oliver wrote some beautiful poetry about Wild Geese and your post reminded me of this one livelovesimple.com/wild-gee...

Also one of the lines from another Geese poem that your post reminds me of, and inspires me to run is โ€œTell me what will you do with your one wild and precious life?โ€ (from Summer Day).

I love your posts -and huge well done on your progress. I hope Mr OF is recovering well.

Hello! Thank you for calling in here !

I love Mary Oliver and her poetry. One of her books, A Thousand Mornings is permanently on my bedside table:)

Gosh that is a beautiful poem... I love these lines...

"Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese..."

A little bit like our running world really... who we are, where we are... but the world is out there for our taking... x

Mr OF is recovering well, getting more confidence back... and seems cheerier:) I did Week 6 Run 2 on my repeat C25K adventures, this morning... chilly but glorious sunshine!

No geese , but an awful lot of pheasants around! Thank you for calling on and that link too , please pop in again x
