Running after Hip Replaced

Hi, unfortunately after completing the program I had to have a total hip replacement. I have been told that due to this my running days are over ( not that I was actually much of a runner…more a very slow jogger!) but I just wondered what other people’s experiences are?

🍏 You have to abide by your medical advice as everyone is different but I can tell you there are runners on this forum who have had hip replacements. I hope they see this post and reply to you! I feel for you if you enjoyed your slow jogging! Watch this space and see what response you get!

I hope you hear from others on here who have had hip replacements & are running again. You will need to run it by your medical team though. X

Hi, I've had 3 hip replacements. I'm 69 now and had never run in my life until last November. My hips are now - left 28 years, right 8 years. I wore the right one out (dancing) after 20 years 😆 so had to have that one re-done . Different consultants say different things. Mine told me not to be held back by my hips but to go out and use them. I'd been in pain all my life until then. Once you get your mobility back and do your post-op exercises religiously you should be able to get back to your pre-op fitness or be even better as you won't have that awful nagging pain. Don't run before you can walk though - it could take months so be patient and listen to your body. Take care oh! and be prepared to set the alarms off when you go through airport security. It happens to me every time 😂

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am back at gym and found recovery very quick but think I will leave it a while longer before I try my gentle jog! Hope you have many more years dancing.

I had a total left hip replacement 18 months ago. I am 61 now and have run/ jogged since my 40s.. I have just finished W4 and am really enjoying my running again. It can be done but go really steady and see how your body feels. If it hurts then stop and try again later. I have had to build up muscle strength and flexibility as well.

Thanks for your reply. I have mild osteoarthritis in the right hip so think I’m worried that jogging might aggravate that & I will end up having the right hip replaced! Maybe I should leave it a little longer as it’s only 5 months since the replacement.

I did try running before now but I really wasn't ready. I started swimming and yoga that really helped.

Don't give up on the running try again later.

Medical opinions can vary and it’s worth seeking another opinion. Physios specialising in running can be particularly helpful in supporting people to run after health challenges. People can and do return to running after hip replacements but it’s got to be right for you. We’d always recommend listening to medical professionals, and until you’ve been cleared to run by someone in real life with appropriate training, it’s best to follow the advice you’ve been given not to start running again

Really good luck with your recovery and your continuing fitness journey, whatever that looks like. ❤️
