I had a long day working in London yesterday, leaving home at 10 and getting back well after midnight. But when I caught up with people's running exploits this morning, one word struck me: fun.
I enjoyed the early runs - even up to week 6/7. And I REALLY feel the benefits of running; I'm so different after 8 weeks. But running is one of the things I try to fit in my day (or my every other day). It's a duty. Almost a chore.
My scheduled runs for week 9 were Monday/Wednesday/Friday. But carry over work from yesterday means Monday will be very busy and that's where I need to focus my still post long-Covid energies. Wednesday is a work evening in London, so a 30 minute run would not be a good idea. So I thought - exactly as I day when I did the first run of all - why not do a run right now. And the spur of the moment notion did the trick.
But the app went a bit skew-whiff. I was waiting for Laura to tell me I had 5 minutes left. I even took a detour as I was clearly running way slower than normal. Finally I checked my phone. Laura had paused with 14 minutes to go. I was already beyond 30 minutes walking/running on the Under Armour app I use too, so I did the last five minutes and let Laura chat to me as I wandered around the garden at the end.
So I ended up doing a bit more running than planned and if not exactly fun, it was no chore. And I feel mildly chuffed with myself.
Happy running!

Well done for your first run of Week 9. You should be chuffed to have got this far with the long Covid problems you’ve had. I would say bin the Laura commentary, but the comments and the 5 & 1 minute warnings are useful - and the halfway bell.
Plus, the congratulations when you’ve completed Run 3 are worth it!
Only 2 more runs for you. And changing run days doesn’t matter. An extra rest day or two won’t make any difference now. Just fit them in when you can.
Tucked away in a corner of my brain is the mentality that - I have daily done M, W, F running with a 2 day rest for the entire time. And after basically zero fitness for 3 years, if I go 3 days without running my fitness will fall off a cliff and I'll go from being able to run for 28 minutes, to needing to do Week 1 again ...
Yes they are! You could always do something else on the days you don’t run to satisfy that corner of your brain, but you won’t lose fitness that quickly!
Well done on your achievement. You're nearly at the finishing line for the programme and won't that feel good. When I couldn't get my running fix, whilst taking time to recover, I'd often do a brisk walk instead. It got me out into the beautiful morning, and walking quickly enough, it still raised the heartbeat enough to feel like I was still keeping the fitness levels up. It worked for me. See you at finishing post.
