1st outing in new shoes, and completed week 5, pace still slooow, but after reading Ians post decided to stop worrying about pace, had a very enjoyable trot, on the outward part was playing tag with an heron until he got fed up and just flew off bored with me following him, on the return section had a small flock of martins or swifts (cant tell them apart) flying along with me and diving down and just touching the canal making little splashes, fun to watch but still had run to finish. Roll on week six.😃

Great to read Pete !Very well done and you'll probably be smiling all day now 😬

Glad the shoes came good also !

Take your time with week 6 runs 1 and 2 as they often catch people out with going back to intervals!

There’s something extra good about running in new shoes! Mine have been out a few times now but they still feel all shiny and clean and a joy to run in! Sounds like you had a brilliant time and did a great job with that run. It must have been so lovely to see the birds enjoying themselves along with you! 🏃‍♀️❤️🪶

Sounds like a good run!

I’ve just been reading about the shortage of insects this year.. I think swifts and martins catch them in the air, so hopefully plenty for them over your canal..🤞

We have canal and river running in parallel with a really good mix of habitat in-between them which helps the wildlife.😁 Occasionally get a flash of the Kingfisher along canal.

I think you're very brave Petem56. Either that or the canal towpaths round you are in much better condition that the ones around me. I'd be scared of tripping and falling in, never mind watching the wildlife.

Fairly good towpaths around here, only one or two rough patches along section I'm using luckily.

Well done you, on all levels...pace is very much in the posts currently...latest Catch up Corner Posts are all about taking it gently and just enjoying!Your run sounds wonderful!

Enjoyable run, was one of those that felt like you could continue past the end of the run easily, but common sense prevailed.

Swifts have longer, straighter wings and are all tawny. Martins have quite a bit of white on their bodies and have sort of grey wings. (Swallows have much more curved wings and a noticeably longer tail with projecting feathers on each 'tail fin'.) Happy running - and bird-watching!

I think these were Sand Martins to be honest, I know there are areas that they nest in along that section.
