Week 5 Hip Hurting

Was due to do week 5 run 2 today & had to delay as my right hip is agony. Really sore in my joint when Im walking. My question is should I rest up or am I better trying to run through it? Really dont want to lose momentum with my progress cos Im loving it & this is such a crucial week mentally but scared if I try & power through, I’ll end up injured & out for weeks. Anyone experienced similar & can offer advice? Should say Im 48 & new to running. Thanks

Ooh that's such a shame 😮Personally I'd not run..but try some gentle stretching see if that helps loosen your muscles...

Hopefully it doesn't last long and you'll be back on track 🤞

Better a few days out than risk making it worse.. wishing you well 😃

thanks Sparky. Im gutted cos I’ve been so psyched up for this week but you’re right. I’ll rest for a couple of days & hopefully it’ll do the trick 🙂

Hi 284ever , I think this is your first post, so welcome! Your enthusiasm for C25K is great, and you're doing really well to have got to week 5.

You're right though - please don't run when you're in pain, it's not worth it. Better to rest up, maybe try some gentle stretching too. Just don't overdo it - and I know that's easier said than done when you're raring to go! If things don't improve with a few days off, then consider getting advice from a physio or other health professional. The runs will wait for you.

Have you had a look at the programme guide? If not, it's well worth a read, as it's got lots of helpful information: healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Wishing you a speedy recovery, and enjoy C25K!

You never run through the pain that you described as agony. We run through discomfort but pain is something else. Pain often signals an injury and running through pain will aggravate it, not better it. I know, I did it. The result was not weeks but months off running, expensive physio and loads of frustration. You’ve got to check that out, ideally a sports physio would look at it. In the meantime don’t push it further. Once they fix it simply repeat the program. I did. Twice.

Welcome and please do take the advice from Cmoi and check out that post... and as mrrun says, we never run through pain.

Are you putting spme more core strength and stamina work in, now that the runs are getting longer? It is so imortant to keep the whole of our running body strong.

healthunlocked.com/strength...

There is a link to hip exercise.

Check this post out and do have a look around the Strength and Flex Frou, to get ideas for working out an exercise regime to keep you, hopefully, injury free.

Keep us posted please.

thank you. Tbh I havent been doing anything other than running & very basic cool down stretches. I’ll have a look at the link you’ve posted & the stretches suggested. Its feeling better today so Im thinking a few days rest should get me back to normal & I can start the stretching suggested to hopefully stop it happening again. Thanks for all the advice.

Oh poor you! You’ve already had lots of posters give you great advice to rest while you’re in pain, look at strength and flex exercises to support your hip and consider seeking advice if it doesn’t settle. I’ll just send lots of sympathy-it’s miserable to be making great progress and suddenly be hit with a setback. You’d be surprised how many of us that happens too-hopefully this will just be a short blip and you’ll be back out soon. It’s worth being sensible and patient (hard though that is!!) until you’re ready to restart. Fingers crossed for you to be back out soon.🤞

Physio told me mine was due to weak glutes!

I had exactly the same. I did a bit of research and found that IT band stretches really eased it for me. I do them before and after each run as part of my stretches.Hope this helps.

Just rest for a few days and then begin again very gently at first. Never run or even walk in pain. Hope you get better soon.👍👍

Managed to get this working so that I can reply!

I’m 47 and also new to running - started in January. Although I’m already pretty fit, I had pain in my hip and knee on one side at week 4.

I went and had my running gait analysed and got more supportive trainers which definitely have helped. I cut down to twice a week for a few weeks and just kept repeating week 4.

It’s starting to feel much better now and taking less time to recover after each run. I make sure I do lots of stretches before and after (probably spend longer stretching than running!😆)

I also watched a few tutorials and slowed down the pace so that I could work on improving my posture and technique (think I was bending over too far.) This also seems to have helped a lot.

Going to try for 3 runs next week 🤞🏼

Hopefully it’s just teething problems and we’ll get through it. Don’t want to have to give it up, as I’m really enjoying it.

Good luck x
