Week 6 run 1

Just finished my first run of week 6 coming along not to bad 3.2k . I have a 5k on the 17th June . I really want to do it for my mum who sadly passed away 10 weeks ago which was a big shock. I had got up to the end of week 7 before my mum passed and then started it again . It is my mums birthday on the 16th June . I just want to ask advice how should increase my distance as i am scared i won’t be able to do the 5k x

As long as you stick to a steady conversational pace you should be able to manage. Don’t be afraid to take a walk any time it gets too hard. After a chest infection I’m doing 5 min walk, 15 run, 5 walk, 15 run, 5 walk, and I’m covering 5.2k in those 45 minutes. So you can complete a ParkRun in a time that’s perfectly ok without having to push yourself to run all the way. With that knowledge you have nothing to fear. The Plan will take you up to 30 minutes running before your 5k is due, so there’s only a little extra needed, probably only 10 minutes.

Take it easy, that’s the single most important thing. Don’t rush - it’s so easy to get carried along by faster runners at the start. Be prepared to slow down or walk if you’re struggling. It’s a great feeling to complete it.

Good luck!

There is no shame in walking part of your 5k.

You won't be the only one.

To push onto 5k without building to it gradually will undoubtedly increase your injury risk.

Far better to take it easy and walk if necessary than make your commemorative run your last for a while because you are injured.

Please take care. Your Mum would not want you to get injured.

So sorry for the loss of your mum Florida04. Well done on finding the strength to do something positive during what must be a very difficult time.

By sticking to the programme you could be at end of week 8 by the 17th... By then you'll have a week of solid 25min runs and a couple of 28min runs however I'd encourage you to do these at slow safe pace forgetting the distance. I think it's best you think about completing the 5K between running and walking than pushing to run the entire 5K if you are not close to that target during that week (do not be discouraged if you're not). This might help take some of the pressure off you and the last thing you will want is to pick up an injury and be unable to complete it.

Take the 5K slow, especially at the start and if you feel okay towards the end then you can push more but if it's too much then walk - finishing it injury free will be the best way you can do it for your mum.

Take care of yourself
