Calves and hamstrings were killing me yesterday from the moment I got up. I don't run fast, surely I couldn't have overdone Mondays run? I had done my stretches.. or had I? Eventually the penny dropped... I had spent a considerable time with the kids at a play park - and in particular at certain seesaw swing thing 🤦♂️ (maybe they should move that contraption to the outdoor gym equipment).
Spent longer than usual this morning walking back and forth and stretching out then out the door determined that I do my run today (no rain!!). Crosswinds played their part to make it more challenging and when I saw one of the regular runners walking to gather his breath it was tempting to stop also. Slowed to almost jogging on the spot to see if he was okay. Wind had just caught him unaware but said he was fine, carry on and he'd catch me soon enough. Few minutes later he whizzed past with a "thanks, second wind now".... Now he's just showing off 😆
Few wee wobbly moments where things seem more difficult but I've already done 30mins and program has been doing its part aside from the physical preparation, so confident to finish it and just needs some focus at those moments. I've found that sometimes slowing doesn't help much so I concentrate on faster steps for 30 secs to a minute then back to normal and that does the trick (tho might be something psychological).
I've ignored Laura when the run is almost over and suggests going faster if feeling fine.. Nah, slow is fine thanks ... But today thought why not and pushed the pace up for the final minute. Far from a sprint but good to know there is something in the tank to push that extra bit and recovery is much better than weeks ago.
Just one run to go 😱

Been good on my water intake over last week's (don't think I drop below 2ltrs and then other drinks add to that). Quite sure was just that stupid seesaw thing lol. A lot of squatting and pushing off the ground in different directions - just didn't give it a thought until after I was aching 😬. Have a weak left hamstring (amongst other things) that I'm working on with physio which clearly didn't help. Not aching half as much after the run today.
Could be any number of things and as IannodaTruffe says.. hydration is one of them. Plenty of exercises out there for keeping those calves comfortable.
Thanks. Have one of the programs bookmarked from strength and flex forum but going through exercises with physio atm and trying not to divert much from what they have set. Think those pains were self inflicted acting a kid and I just need to avoid play parks for a while 😂
Ah, those moments when you’re pondering what’s up with you and then realisation dawns. That’s what happens when you’re having fun and not noticing the muscles you’re using. At least it sounds like you had fun at the park.
A GIANT hooray for a rain-free run. About time it was your turn (does that mean I’ll get wet tomorrow?)
Congratulations on keeping going despite the wind and for checking in on your fellow runner. Interesting how our brain impacts how we feel. I might try upping my cadence to see if that helps. Thanks for sharing that idea.
Well... What can I say but the kid inside me took over at the park. Was only just reminded about going down one of the slides to encourage the little one 🤭
Due to rain here again tonight but nice again tomorrow so maybe tonight's shower will be your share again 😁
As for the run, i think it sometimes just takes something to concentrate on even a short while when it feels difficult and it's enough compose yourself. Still don't like the wind but I don't hate it like it did before and don't even bother with face covering anymore. One to go! Whooohoo!
