I absolutely love running with my adult son, finding the time to run early on a Sunday morning is just awesome. Its just a shame that it takes me (53 years old) at least 10 minutes to find my pace.
We like to do 5k, today it was done in 37 minutes a pb for us both. I still find it a mental challenge to complete 5k despite doing this running, normally on my own since graduation in June or July and twice a week. My mind screams at me "STOP" always around 4.5k!
My son pushed me on, I would have done it but with reducing my speed.
Embarrassingly, runners trots occurred last Sunday, I found this quite traumatic, I now worry about it happening again and am now considering replacing running with cycling in the new year. This is a shame as despite not particularly liking running, I love the way it makes me feel after, invigorated, free minded stress reduced and of course iam much fitter.
I dont know if iam looking for reassurance or answers.
Perhaps I could do both!

Well done you've found your running buddy. They call it "The Toxic Ten" it's the time taken for runners to find their pace you can read more about this in FAQs in the Pinned Posts and a post that slow running is better for you.
Ideally you should be running at the easy conversational pace of the slowest runner. That is the best way to develop your aerobic fitness.......faster is not better.
I've had a couple of "runners trots" incidents. I'm sure everyone has them from time to time.
Don't get worried about it. The womensrunning article is probably the most useful.
TLDR: Avoid caffeine before a run. Slow down. Make sure you are routinely taking in enough fluids. Don't have certain known irritant foods before a run. If you must eat before a run, have something bland and easily digested.
So glad you mentioned runners trots. I really struggle with that and also bladder issues. As well as the physical things, I noticed that it usually hits me most when I slow to the cool down walk, so I think my brain is also involved, when it thinks I am near the toilet. Since I introduced post-run stretches, I have fooled it a little and it has helped. But still happens sometimes and it's putting me off joining an organised event. I'm going to read the links others posted and hope there's more help in there.
How lovely to be able to run with your son Kimikins! Sorry to hear about your runners trots - I really suffered last winter but it stopped after I gave up drinking green tea before I went out (and that was because I didn’t want coffee and don’t like ordinary tea!). Haven’t drunk it since! Which is a nuisance because I’d just bought a new box of teabags😂!
