Ohhhh injury!!!

Due to complete week 2 run 3 tonight. I’m a complete beginner having never run before. It was going so well! Actually enjoying the achievement of it all… when ouch!! Extreme calf pain during the first 1.5 min run… sensibly stopped and now ice and rest as recommended by the personal trainer at the gym. I’m upset but also know I need to get better before I run again… how do you cope with that disappointing feeling?!

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

Injury can happen to any of us but usually strikes because you are doing more than your body is conditioned to cope with. The guide gives links to the NHS Sports injuries page and the PRICE principles to aid recovery.

If it doesn't seem to be getting better, then do consult your GP or physio.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

You will be back!

Enjoy your journey.

It's never easy to deal with injury but looks like you are doing the right thing .We can of course do all we can to try and avoid it .

If you haven't already then do read the program guide !

It's full of information to help get you safely through the program.

Keep all your runs slow , keep well hydrated, (approx 2.5 to 3 litres a day , even on non run days) and always do the after run stretches !

I personally also always do the dynamic warm up excercises before I run

Do make sure you are pain free before continuing .

I’m just coming back from an injury. Just know that the runs are always there for you. Take your time and take it easy. You can’t go slow enough when you’re training a fresh pair of running legs 🦵👍
