Does anyone wear a lightweight jacket/hat?? I think i might be uncomfortable. I'm on wk6 run3 this morning and I've not had torrential rain yet...also worrying about falling over lol!!

Sorry to hear about the rain baking cupcake. Personally I wear a light waterproof jacket, and also a peaked cap - I wear glasses so the peak helps with keeping the rain off my face. A lot of people find running in the rain enjoyable - it’s actually quite liberating once you’re out there! Good luck with the run 🏃‍♀️.

Thanks Frenc, I've been out and done it - the rain actually gradually wore off as I made my way I didn't wear anything different to normal as I thought I might get too warm and irritated in a jacket - but might look at getting a peaked cap - good advice! thanks

For light rain, I don't wear anything different to normal. If you're wearing waterproofs you'll get just as wet on the inside of them from your own sweat. The "boil in the bag" effect.

Really heavy rain is another matter. Nothing you could be wearing is going to help with that.

Yes I didn't wear anything different to normal and I was fine - I definitely would have "boiled" in my lightweight jacket! Fortunately it wasn't torrential rain and did ease off as I was running!

I have a windproof jacket that I only ever wear if it is really cold and windy, but it does keep off light rain.

The trouble with raincoats for running, even breathable ones, is you get as wet from the inside as you do from the rain.

It is your choice whether you would rather have fresh cooling rain soaking you or your own sweat.

Skin is remarkably waterproof.

I bought a Ron Hill breathable jacket, which has a built in hood. Did the job for me when I lived in the UK.

Pretty much just go as it working to the the temperature and the wind. I do try and avoid rain if at all possible but not something easy to do in Scotland. Much like others have said it’s avoiding the boil in the bag effect. Breathable stuff like Paramo make might be ok but not tried myself.

Be very careful of your fabrics though as some stuff is terrible for keeping you warm while wet. Cotton is absolutely one to avoid as it absorbs a lot of water, gets very heavy and won’t keep you warm once it’s sodden. Synthetic stuff is good as is wool, particularly merino wool which I swear by.

Ok thanks for this great advice...yes keeping warm is a factor to consider. I dont wear cotton for running so no worries there

Excellent start there :-)

Have a look at some information around clothing and layering for hill walking. It’s slightly different as you don’t go high when running for the most part part but otherwise materials and laying wise for base and mid layers a lot carries over into running. I pretty much use the same layering for both in different mixes.

Yes i have base layers etc for walking so i am crossing over some of my clothing, I'll have a look at that Paramo you suggested too...thanks ever so much! Love this forum everyone is very friendly and helpful!

Paramo make excellent stuff for hill walking. I’d definitely research for running as I’ve never tried it. I’ve worn the Velez Smock at the equator during a torrential downpour and neither overheated nor got soaked so it’s certainly as light and breathable. That was walking slowly not running mind.

I’ve picked up a lot off this forum so always happy to try and return the favour where I can :-)
