Week 5

I’m hopefully going on to Week 5 next week (if my next Week 4 run is ok). I’ve noticed that on the app there is a choice of running either 3/4 of a mile or 8 minutes and either 1/2 a mile or 5 minutes. When does the voice kick in on the app? Presumably after the 8 and 5 minutes? It won’t be a problem for me but if we’re running 3/4 of a mile faster than 8 minutes how does that square with the voice on the app? Do we do the run without the app? Questions questions!

You're using a different app to most of the rest of us.

The UK NHS app scheme uses the following minute timings (in addition to 5 min warm up and cool down walks):

W5R1: run 5, walk 3, run 5, walk 3, run 5

W5R2: run 8, walk 5, run 8

W5R3: run 20

Distances aren't used at all.

I have the same timings on the C25K app they just offer the distance as well as the timing. The voice will have to go by the timings as there is no other way. The app can’t gauge our distance. Do you have a Fitbit?

You need the One You Couch to 5k NHS app. You can fast forward through each run to the place you’re at.

I think the one I have has exactly the same timings. I’ll check the NHS one out though.

There are many flavours of the C25k programme and this forum is primarily devoted to those using the NHS/One You app which is entirely duration based, with no options or demands on distance to cover, although you are very welcome, regardless of which app you use.

However, you are unlikely to get a straight answer to a question specifically about another app.

This guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... is based on the NHS app/ podcast version, but includes many basic tips for new runners.

Personally, I’d go timed... it’s the time in heart raising exercise that really boosts the health and fitness... that distance stuff is best worried about later.
