Hmmm. According to this you are pushing yourself very hard. I suspect that watch is giving out false data at times. Are you wearing it on the right part of your wrist and is it tight enough? On my watch it has to be reasonably tight and at least 1 inch above your wrist bone and not down to the wrist bone else it will give false readings.

A rough estimate of your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age in years so accordingly you are running at very near your maximum heart rate for a lot of the time and even exceeding it (red zone) for some of the time!! How hard are you actually running because I would expect you to be very much out of breath and very very sweaty according to the data??

You're average cadence is quite high too so your legs must be moving quite quickly. The maximum cadence of 229 is obviously a blip else you would have melted the tarmac !!😂😂

Sorry to sound so graphic lol 😂😂

Haha! Ok. I think the watch is in the right place and is tight enough to leave a mark on my wrist. I’ll move it slightly further from my wristbone for my next run. I’m 66. So that makes maximum heart rate 154. I read somewhere that this formula may not be accurate in older people.

Yes, I was pushing quite hard! I had to, you were going to be looking at my data 😂. I don’t usually go into the red zone. I was certainly out of breath at the end, but not sweating. (I was on Saturday, I was too hot)

Yes, my legs were moving quite quickly. I’ll have to sort that tarmac out.

Ha ha. I just had a nasty feeling that I'd got your age all wrong lol. No that's what I thought you were thank goodness for that !! I will make my next run a 4k one and see if I can post my data on here to compare. In the meantime does your Garmin give you a figure for your VO2Max ???

Yes. It says it’s 34. Says it’s excellent. And that my fitness age is 46! Top 20% for my age and gender. Running is making me younger 😂

I reckon you're a bit of a dark horse lol. 😂😂That's brilliant !! The other parameter I forgot about was average stride length? It must record that..

.77 metre

So all things being equal and summing up you are a good runner Jools !! Your respiratory / cardiovascular capacity is excellent as is your cadence. Your pace is being hindered by your stride length which is a little short but maybe that's down to your stature?

There is absolutely no reason on earth why you couldn't get up to 5k. All you need to do is back off a bit on your cadence which would then bring your heart rate down and you'd be running more aerobically rather than anaerobically. You've definitely got the heart / lung capacity to cope.

I reckon one of these days you should go for it!! It's like graduation all over again lol 😂😂👍🍷

Wow, you’ve made my day! I appreciate your suggestions and thank you for putting in the time.

I have felt that my stride length is a little short. That’s why I mentioned it before, without even knowing what it was. I’m quite tall, 5’ 8”. Could I make a conscious effort to lengthen it slightly, or is that not advisable?

I would leave it as it is. Bed in your new shoes too. You don't want to overstride as that encourages landing with more of a heelstrike which isn't good. I'm tall 6' 1" but have short legs so my stride length is about .88m

I run at a lower cadence than you at 155 but my pace is slightly higher as I cover more ground per step due to my longer stride. I could run faster but have back issues and don't want to push my luck too much.

My daughter is 5'5" and has relatively long legs, runs at 170 cadence, has a stride length of .98m and leaves me for dust.......😂😂

So a lot of this is down to your genes and body shape some of which we just can't change...

I'll post my data up next run😁
