W1R3 - Rain supreme

If I’d just gone out five minutes earlier I would’ve timed it perfectly. As it was, I had a very good run before the weather, wait for it, CLOUDED my vision.

Let’s just say my spirits... WERE DAMPENED.

WATER WAY to end a run.

I got wet.

So I was better prepared for this one. I had lunch today so that’s a huge step forwards from the last one. Overall it was pretty well timed, I had lunch, worked for a few hours and went down to make dinner. I probably drank way more coffee than was necessary today but it got the work done, mostly at least.

It turns out food is a pretty good motivator, especially if I’m the one who made it and I know it’s waiting for me the moment I finish running. Today I did a spaghetti Bolognese, which I normally like to make myself and include as many vegetables as I can without making it completely vegetarian because I like meat too much to take that particular step, but today we needed a quick option so I went for a jar of ready made sauce with some peas and sweetcorn thrown in to make me feel better about it. It wasn’t bad anyway and after a run I couldn’t wait.

So with dinner made, my partner having had her run already this afternoon and my lunch about 4 hours behind me, the time was right for Run 3.

It had rained already today, which was fine, but the garden was wet so I had to watch my step a little. But this hardly affected anything so I was good to go. Today’s music was Parallel Lines by Blondie, one of my favourite albums of all time by one of my favourite bands of all time and joint favourite Blondie album with Autoamerican, which I might take out for a spin for the next one.

I’m also a little bit in love with Debbie Harry. Yes, I know she’s 75.

Anyway I stayed with the garden today but I’m thinking of branching out for future runs, there’s a park near here that looks quite nice on google maps.

So I got started with the warm up walk and used that time to remove a small branch overhanging from the neighbour’s garden that keeps hitting me in the face when I forget to duck under it. It took a few tries because I didn’t want to stop but I managed to get it out the way. He won’t miss it, he can’t even see that side.

The other week I was passing his hedge and startled something hiding in it. I don’t know what it was but it scared the hell out of me.

The first run was fine and during the first walking break I was feeling good. It continued like this with minimal difficulties, although I had to slow down for corners to avoid slipping over. In fact it went very well, I didn’t really get out of breath, I didn’t get any pains, I didn’t really overheat and it all flew by pretty quickly. Sort of.

(Ok so I did sweat a lot but there’s nothing I can do about that. Unless I just stop drinking water maybe, that should fix it. I’m sure it’s safe.)

Around the third run a light shower started to sprinkle down, and that was good because I love running in that kind of rain. So it continued and I was loving it and it stopped and then started and then I noticed it was starting to threaten me with something heavier.

But that was fine. Ok, maybe I wasn’t dressed for rain, I had my usual tshirt and combats combination, but the running was keeping me warm so as long as I kept moving I’d be fine.

Towards the end it started to rain a bit harder and I started thinking maybe I should get my hoody. It’s right there in the kitchen, if I keep running on the spot while I put it on I might be able to pull this off. I mean pull off putting it on, not literally pull it off. English is weird.

But it didn’t get too heavy so I thought, keep going, it’ll be fine. And it was! Just about. It did keep getting heavier briefly before relenting and calming down, which was a fun guessing and second-guessing game but ultimately I settled on no hoody.

And then I made it to the end!

And then as I started the cool down walk the sky opened and it very quickly turned into a warm the hell back up walk. I confidently decided to take it on and see this through and that confidence lasted maybe five seconds before it got a bit too much so I went back in, walked on the spot while I got my hoody on, and headed back out for the last few minutes. Seconds after that I decided to take nature’s hint and get the hell back inside so I spent the last few minutes having a very wet walk up and down the hall.

So that was a little bit annoying but it’s a minor complaint because I nailed this one in every other way. I never got too tired and I had a nice sprint up and down the garden during the last run. I recovered quickly and had a nice meal in the process and I’m still buzzing from it.

So it’s been a great first week and I’m looking forward to hopefully starting Week 2 on Wednesday. Previously I’ve tried to stick to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday structure with the weekend for recovery but I’m eager to power through this so my aim is a run every second day.

Life is going to continue getting in the way but I’m just going to run with it and burden you with as many bad puns as I can think of in the process. You’ve seen my previous posts, you know what you’re in for when you tap on these.

Lucky you to have a big garden to run in. I haven’t got headphones for my phone so I just have Sarah Millican cheering me on.😊

It’s good for these short runs (and really good for the kids to play in) but I think I’ll have to head out for the longer ones, not sure I can run in a circle for 20 minutes! It has to be Jo Whiley for me though, I listened to her all the time as a student, really helped me get through a boring data entry job.

I drove out to a nearby Heath for my run tonight ( week 2 run1) , my husband is doing this with me ( but he’s a proper runner just out of practice, while I go veeeerrry slowly )! I managed to persuade my younger son to come too- he’s 13 and usually attached to a screen. 🙄 It helped me to avoid sore shins, last week it was hellish, due to pounding the pavement.

I started out with Sarah Millican but find Jo Wiley a much better match to my needs.

Ha, with your excellent taste in music I knew you’d be a Jo Wiley kinda man! She’s awesome. Her incredible effort for Sport Relief also means I have more respect for her telling me what to do! 🤘🏼
