First run at over 60 years old ... so pleased but am I mad??

Well I have done it - first session and I am not totally flat on my back .... so chuffed. I was very careful and started pretty gently. I have hardly done any running since my school days apart from one charity 5k run (more of a walk really, several years ago). I have heard so much about this app and my daughter in law is on week 4 I think and raves about it so ...... with nothing much else to do (except eat) I thought I would give it a go. I did warn my other half to come looking for me if I wasn’t back in 30 minutes in case I collapsed in one of the quiet lanes around the village where we live LOL ... but it’s done ... now let’s see if I can keep it up.

Congratulations, you are not mad, well done on starting C25K with run 1 of week 1 and not collapsing, enjoy your runs, remember that you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to, no running on consecutive days as that could cause a injury, onwards and upwards to run 2 of week 1 🏃🏾 👍

Thanks - Good advice. I felt on such a high when I finished that it did cross my mind that I could do it again tomorrow but I won’t.

Thanks - I dithered for quite a few days, well a couple of weeks really, wondering whether I should and it’s great to hear from others who are in the same age group and going great guns.

You are not mad. I am 65 and started this programme at the beginning of February about 4 weeks before lock down. I know because I bought running shoes the Friday before lockdown when I was on my fifth week of C25k. I have completed the programme and run every week. It took a further 3 weeks to get to 5k. I don’t want to do a greater distance than that and I am not bothered that it takes me 40 minutes. I just think it’s amazing that I am doing it and the health benefits are fantastic. It’s kept me happy and positive during lockdown and I have lost weight so it’s all good.

Yes, I think that’s the attitude I have. I don’t care how long it takes me, I just want to be able to complete it for myself. Thanks

Thank you ...I think I was getting too much in the way of thinking I was too old to start something quite so physical but I am so pleased with myself. I will check out the FAQs.

We started last year at 63 and can run for an hour or more now

No, of course not! I did c25k at 60, then my wife did it at 61 we're now 65 and still running.

I've actually done c25k 3 times 1st time on my own, 2nd time with my wife and again recently with wife again as she had a couple of serious medical issues arise, not caused by the running I may add, but we feel the excercise did show up the problems earlier, so there are good benefits to be had, so carry on and let us know how you get on..

Thanks for the encouragement. I was slightly concerned about medical issues although I don’t have any in particular that I’m aware of but, being of that certain age group, I did have one or two imagined scenarios in my mind 🙄. But all was well, although I found the slight incline of part of my route a little more strenuous but I think it will get easier. I will post again after run 2

Aha, well I’m an old codger. Doing W3R3 tomorrow. Just keep it slow and you’ll be fine. Hmm.... said that so now I hope I will be.

Thanks for your welcome. I must admit I have always wondered about people who rave about being hooked on running but I cannot deny the high I felt this afternoon - I’m curious to see if it continues

Hi there JackyGT,

I am 64, very bad knee and never run before in my life.

I completed week 9 last week and am very very happy about it (and my irreparable knee is now better).

It won't be easy (I counted down every "horrible" second during the first few weeks), but it is totally doable and yes, YOU can do it.

You can repeat a day if you feel you haven't quite done it properly. You can even repeat a week. Keep your own pace, there is no such thing as too slow.

You will feel great!

Thank you for your welcome and your honest (and what I expect will be a similar for me as I progress) feelings during some of the runs. I am going to take it carefully and hope I am just as enthusiastic after the first few runs.

Well done JackGT 👏🏻 so glad your other half didn’t have to come looking for you....that made me laugh 😂. Stick with the programme you’ll be amazed where it takes you 👍

Thanks .... if I’m truly honest I was only half joking when I said that to my hubby (I was a bit worried as I live in a very rural area ) but it was fine. 😁

You have just done one of the hardest runs on this programme and won't look back. There are lots of us old codgers on here - I graduated a week after my 61st birthday! Feel great and I'm building up my running time. I'm very slow but a proud member of Team Snail!

Keep posting - this forum is full of fantastic advice and support! Happy running!!! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
