A twilight run today. Hardly a soul around and a tad cooler! So I wanted to ask a question. My neighbour told me people shouldn’t be running during lockdown (he knows I run!) due to the sweating and heavy breathing. What are your thoughts?

The government says you can go outside for one exercise per day. Where i go there are lots of runners and cyclists.

Tell your neighbour to go read the rules.

The photo is really nice, are you a photographer?

CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to

I did recommend that he read government guidelines and that running is mentioned as a form of exercise. Besides I don’t sweat, I perspire! 😂 And thank you. I love taking photographs but just on my iPhone. Would love a snazzy camera though. So no not a photographer. I work in a Family Support Team 👍🏼

Just ignore the git and jog on ;)

You are very good at it, keep them coming.

Your job sounds interesting too..

Stay safe :)

Ha ha, I always thought it was

I like it!

Well done!

And you’re fine to carry on running! They keep telling us that the most important thing is to be fit and healthy but I also saw an interview about exactly this topic the other day, the expert medical advisor said sweat is very unlikely to pass on the virus and as for breathing you should try to stay 2 metres away from anyone but in any case it’s length of contact that matters so running past (no matter how slowly) means you wouldn’t be near anyone long enough to stand any reasonable chance of passing it on (or catching it)

CobbleRunner profile image
CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to Workingathome

Thank you! And that’s exactly what I do - I live in a quiet area so don’t pass that many people on my runs and if I do I keep a safe distance away. He made my blood boil slightly but I just referred him to the government guidelines 😊

Well, the NHS information video on social distancing says you can go out for exercise while actually showing a clip of someone running.

These are difficult times and people are scared, but the best thing you can do for your health, and therefore the NHS, is keep yourself fit and healthy.

Best wishes

Thank you! Yes you are right he is very worried as I don’t think he is in the best of health so understandable. Even though it got my back up a bit I kept my cool 😎

It's more then fine, especially if you go out to run at twilight, not do many people out and about 😊

I tent to go really early in the morning, sometimes I don't even see another person and I live in small town.

Exactly. The only other living soul I saw was a youth on a Vespa 🙂

Hey CR,

Twilight runs are always cool but be alert and stay safe...you never know with these wolves...hahaha

What your neighbour shared with you is actually quite true. This is due to slipstream...where your perspiration and exhales may leave behind droplets in the air for sometime. This is made worse for the next walker or runner after you who happen to pass-by, if you are asymptomatic. If you still want to go out for a run, don a mask for yours as well as others safety. But you have to get use to it, wearing the mask I mean.

Haniff

CobbleRunner profile image
CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to Haniff

Oh! So why is it recommended? I will watch out for those wolves 🙂

Haniff profile image
Haniff in reply to CobbleRunner

Hi CR,

Perhaps this may help to explain. Disclaimer: don’t know if it’s fake but worth watching though.

But please all good people, do your own research and make your own judgment call 👍❤️

That information is from a study which was neither published nor peer reviewed - essentially someone’s theory on what could possibly happen. I have since read other scientific comment on it suggesting that the virus particles are too heavy to float in the air so they fall and do not persist at a level to breath in..

Hi Haniff sorry I didn’t mean to shoot you down in flames.. it’s just that I’ve seen the study plus comments supposedly by the original authors and you are absolutely right that people have to make their own judgments about what’s safe and what they feel comfortable with.. and clearly the more distant the better right now.. just in case.. stay safe and well..😊

I don't know about sweating, but heavy breathing is good for your lungs......your neighbor seems to have misunderstood the rule about being able to go out for exercise 😊

Wiggy57 profile image

The government guidelines certainly permit running as a form of exercise. But can I please remind all runners of the two metre rule. I live in East London and I walk every morning in a park near my home and I'm pretty tired of having to be extra vigilant for runners who appear out of nowhere and seem to have no spatial awareness as they pass people out for a walk. I've lost count of the times I've had to zig zag off the path onto the grass because of a jogger who is determined to keep their line, regardless of social distancing rules. And yes, they are breathing heavily and pushing more potentially infected droplets into the air than ordinary walkers. Yesterday I had to walk in the road to avoid a jogger on the pavement, who ran within inches of a blind lady who was taking her exercise and had no idea he was there. She was walking with a cane and it was quite obvious she couldn't see him. I'm afraid I find that a sizeable minorityof joggers are selfish and are putting other people at risk.

CobbleRunner profile image
CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to Wiggy57

Gosh that is selfish. I run in a quiet rural area although I have to say there are more folk out and about getting their daily exercise fix during the day. I’m going to stick to twilight runs during lockdown and please know that I am a very courteous runner 🙂

johnm12 profile image
johnm12Graduate in reply to Wiggy57

Very silly. I make a definite and clear move to maintain distancee. Usually also call out " Good morning, all well?" and get in most cases a cheery reply. Its just basic isnt it?

Cakerunner profile image
CakerunnerGraduate in reply to Wiggy57

Ridiculous! Obviously I can't speak for others but I give everyone a very wide berth when I'm running, or walking, often stepping onto the road side or crossing over if necessary so that no one feels threatened by my huffing and puffing! However, I've met a fair few who do seem completely unperturbed by any form of social distancing! I've had to dodge a few of those!😶

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate in reply to Wiggy57

I spend 50% of my outdoor exercise running and 50% of my outdoor exercise walking. I spend 100% of my outdoor exercise being courteous and following social distancing guidelines.

The world isn't divided into sensible people and runners; it's divided into sensible people and insensitive people.

Wiggy57 profile image
Wiggy57 in reply to Speedy60

Er, if you read my comment carefully, I didn't say that all runners were insensitive.

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate in reply to Wiggy57

I'm sorry, I agree you didn't. I just wanted to make the point that people are people. They don't change when they take both feet off the ground for their exercise.

Have a good afternoon. 👍

Silkbee profile image
Silkbee in reply to Wiggy57

This is interesting. I live in a seaside town and run at dusk. I’ve found myself zigzagging all over the place to avoid walkers and cyclists coming towards me who have no intention of moving. Like you, I’ve had to hop onto the road and on one occasion faced with a cyclist who seemed to be aiming at me onto the pebble beach, ouch!

Quite honestly I think we all need to be very aware of our surroundings and there are thoughtless people in all groups, runners, walkers and cyclists alike. I guess we just have to do our best.

Wiggy57 profile image
Wiggy57 in reply to Silkbee

I know, it's like a mad game of 'chicken', isn't it? We've had to dodge walkers as well, when it's clear they ain't gonna budge. We just have to move a bit quicker when it's a jogger 😆. So very wearing. If the park opened at dawn, we'd be up then, just to avoid other people.

MrsIzzyWizzy profile image
MrsIzzyWizzyGraduate

According to the government, running is one form of ‘permitted exercise.’ If you are following the now usual rules of social distancing, I would have thought that the risk of another person catching anything from you is no higher than anything else.

Yep I run solo. And on my non running days I take a walk with my daughter.

Allbarron profile image
AllbarronGraduate

Lovely picture! I agree it's much nicer to run when abtad cooler. Can I just put another perspective on this. I run down cycle paths which are usually deserted. Lots of families out now walking. Both myself and any cyclists now find shouting ahead to say excuse me as families walk three and four abreast with out moving to allow people past. Last week a group of dog walkers stopped to chat standing in and across the path which meant I had to run right round them. We all need to be accomodating not just runners. And as for a slip stream, no way I run fast enough to cause this phenomena 🤣

CobbleRunner profile image
CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to Allbarron

Yes definitely more people around during the day. I’m going to stick to twilight runs from now on. Plus I run on the road so easy to keep a 2m distance. I am also Captain Slow 😬

Perhaps he was well meaning but he is talking complete nonsense. As long as you maintain social distancing all is perfectly fine. The mental wellbeing aspects of running are even more important now. I agree that taking a photo is great fun whilst out and about. I usually add them to strava as they remind me of each run. Keep running! Btw well done with c25k, fun isn't it?

CobbleRunner profile image
CobbleRunnerGraduate in reply to johnm12

I think he was and he is a pleasant man but currently feeling the strain. Absolutely agree regarding wellbeing - I feel so much better after a run, even one that I’ve found tough. And yes I always try to take a photo to document my run. C25K is cracking! So glad I started 🙂

I would say as long as you can run somewhere where you can have distance from people it’s ok, not easy , I’ve been trying to go early in the morning to avoid other people

We’re allowed to go out albeit a walk, jog, or a run . I can see who’s in front of me and give the public a very wide birth . Currently, with no traffic , I often run in the road . I always acknowledge the public as I pass.

Others who choose to walk could all be coughing and or sneezing for all I know !

Here's a thought as well, being asthmatic (not yet confirmed but non the less medicated!) I do tend to cough more when I run......probably puts some peeps in fear.....despite the wide berth I give them!.....I did consider the other day, popping a sign on my back that says, "Don't worry, its only asthma!" Or some such....by gum, its strange times we live in, is it not??!😳

You are of course allowed to run BUT you must also observe the social distancing rule of keeping at least 2 metres away from other people: it’s not a question of how fast or slow you run as has been suggested, it’s all about distance. And please, everybody, as a runner and a pedestrian myself, don’t expect everyone else to get out of your way, especially if you come up behind them!
