Mum and son run

Hi everyone - this is my first post.

I have just completed the third run in the first week. Myself and my son (age 7), decided that we wanted to learn to run to keep our fitness up while my gym is closed and his swimming lessons are off (he swims regularly 3 times a week and can easily do 40 lengths - just for perspective).

I just have one question (so far).... obviously the way I jog will be pretty fast for him to keep up (little legs :-) has anyone else competed this successfully with a young one? Or should I just go alone - is it too much to expect him to do?

I feel like he’s pretty fit generally and an active type. What do you think?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

It won't do you any harm to run at a comfortable pace for him............he will be faster than you in no time at all.

Enjoy your journey.

Brilliant thanks... he’s already definitely faster than me but lacks stamina - how far would you say is the limit for him at this age?

Thanks again

I am no expert on child physiology.

If you both follow the plan at the recommended easy conversational pace (see the guide) then I cannot imagine any harm would come to him.

I have often been overtaken by 8 year olds at parkrun, so an 8 year old can easily manage the distance as long as he has built up his resistance to impact stresses by following a safe training plan such as C25k.

Welcome... great job both of you getting started. I too have been passed by some great under 10 5k runners... and your son has good base fitness to work from. In theory he will be more than fine, just don’t be afraid to take extra rest days if he, or indeed you, need to. The plan will cause some achy legs, even for someone used to other sports, but that’s just the muscles conditioning to a new way of working. The key would be to not push a kid too quickly through the plan and make them not want to run... but I get the feeling you’re not that kind of parent anyway.

Enjoy your journeys
