Running list

One of the things that has kept me going is a jolly good running list. Included in mine is Hey Ya, Please don’t leave me, Walking on Sunshine, Two hearts and Bang Bang to name just a few. I’d love to have some recommendations from other folk to extend my running list. Especially as I’m on Wk6...

Oh dear, don't get me started. I can't resist a running playlist thread.

I started collecting quite fast songs, but after deciding I wanted to concentrate on long slow runs, I've started a slower playlist. I have very eclectic tastes. The rules are: no long introductions, a good strong vocal (if there is one) and a steady beat. Do you have spotify?

I don’t have Spotify - do you rate it? I found myself running in time to Hey Ya the other day, which was a tad faster than I would normally run.

I like spotify, but some people don't. The free version has lots of adverts I don't like, but the subscription is £9.99 a month. I spent more than that on CDs but not everybody would.

My fast track favourites at the moment are:

I Love to Boogie by T Rex

Bad Moon Rising by Credence Clearwater Revival

Happy Hour by The Housemartins

Cuz I Can by Pink

Good to be Alive (Hallelujah) by David Grammar

Favourite slow tracks

Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits

For What it's Worth by Buffalo Springfield

Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Credence Clearwater Revival

All Star by Smashmouth

I could go on, but it's down to personal taste. I would say, do consider slow tracks, especially at the beginning of your run. You shouldn't really be charging out of your front door wooping and cheering. You're better off being relaxed and chilled before you bring up the pace.

Couldn’t do without Spotify. I’ve about 100 tracks on my Runspo list now and love magpieing other people’s!

You can get the free version as long as you don't mind listening to a few adverts

From looking back over some of my saved runs/jogs I found that my step rate (cadence) is abt 160 step per minute. I searched Spotify for 160 bpm running playlists and came up with this rock orientated one: open.spotify.com/playlist/7.... I'm sure it won't be too everyone's liking but the first two are great for getting me thro the warm up and into the runs..."Lose yourself" (Eminem) and then "Happy” (Pharrell W) 😃.

What a brilliant idea. I like the science behind that. How did you find out your step rate?

SadlyBroke profile image
SadlyBrokeGraduate in reply toCpop3

I have a fitness tracker that links into Huawei Health app and it gives some great stats to analyse after each run.

Thanks for the link, that's interesting. I already have a few of those, I might steal some more. 👍

Depends what you like but here goes:-

The Police- Every little thing she does is magic

Kings of leon- this sex is on fire

Galantis- Runaway

Robert Tepper- No easy way out

The Weekend- Blinding lights

Martin Jensen- Solo Dance

ZZ Top - Legs

SofaJockey profile image

Hmmm. I'm running at about 145 bpm, a good bit slower than discussed. Perhaps I'll need to take it up to 150, 155 and higher as I progress.

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Graduate in reply toSofaJockey

Be careful you don't push your pace before you're ready; music can do that. For now you need to choose music to suit your pace rather than pace to suit your music.

If you get the time, download the Nike running app and listen to Coach Bennett on the 25 minute easy run. He has very interesting things to say about playlists.

This is what I found with one song - I was going a bit faster than I would normally.

all through c25k I had the same list....it really helped with motivation but since graduation I found it hindered me a bit as I knew what was up next and how far I still had to go. I’m an Apple Music person rather than Spotify and tend to use their playlists and especially the ones that update each week so I don’t know what’s coming up. But I don’t think I could run without some music in my ears. Enjoy the new options suggested!!

I have a real mix on my running playlist. I didn’t look at the bpm until just now and they are all over the place! I chose songs that make me feel good/motivated. Some are songs from movies, some from an exercise dvd I use, some from a dance class I used to attend as a child.

Can’t stop the feeling-Justin Timberlake

World in motion-New Order

When the going gets tough-Billy Ocean

Break my stride-Matthew Wilder

Justified and ancient-KLF

Infinity-guru Josh project

Songs from Rocky, Karate Kid,Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean

That’s Mrs Splodge. She is the Branch cat where I work (RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District) She rules the Animal Centre with a paw of velvet!

in reply toCpop3

Sounds like our very spoilt ginger tabby called baby who is 16 in April and rules the roost with us!

Mrs splodge is a pretty girl!

Cpop3 profile image
Cpop3Graduate in reply to

She came to us in great distress - semi feral really. Over the months of her rehab, she came to trust us. So she stayed and is officially adopted as the branch cat.

in reply toCpop3

Baby doesn't know how lucky she is since she was bought when she was a little kitten and is pampered by her mother!

She has a brown and white tabby mate called Percy who will be 16 in June so they are the same age!

I’ve never got round to making a running list. All my music is still on my CDs ( and some even on LPs 🙄) so I just reposted to week 9 ( on repeat for longer runs) or some of the Bridge to 10k runs again. I don’t really listen to them anyway, as my mind wanders when I’m running and gawping about, but I like to run to the beat and I have been too lazy to make my own playlists.

You can tell I run to the beat as Garmin always thinks I’ve been treadmill running and I have to tell it I have been street running 🤣🤣. Perhaps I need to find a slightly faster beat to improve my times when I’m “fully operational “ once more .....??

Oh I have a pretty odd playlist! Mainly pretty slow stuff - none of that motivational stuff

Prog rock oddly, because I don't normally listen to it but it works for running. Some blues and some Underworld.

Added several of the above...love Born to Run, always makes me smile when it comes on. I just have songs that are upbeat..poker face, ride on time, shake it off, hips don't lie, stuff that makes me want to move...

Lol I also like the Guardians of the Galaxy tune. Redbone and Come and Get Your Love.

I think of Ryan Gosling boogieing around to that and suddenly running seems much happier.

I haven’t caught him yet...

Hello, all! I've been lurking, but reading the list most days. But a music thread brings me out of the woodwork! I have an mp3 player that I use when I'm on the treadmill or inside running track. Sometimes I just hit shuffle which mixes my collection of Indigo Girls, but also throws in some Broadway show tunes and a few other random things. I do have one dedicated playlist that I should probably update, but for now it is a couple of songs by Pink, Never Can Say Goodbye (Communards), Don't Stop 'til You Get enough (M. Jackson), a dance mix of Defying Gravity, You and Julie, which I stole from the C25k podcast, Other Side of Love (Yaz) and some other stuff. I've just discovered Georgia, so I may a few of her tunes to my list.

I love Never Can Say Goodbye. It’s ages since I’ve heard it but feel prompted to download it now!
