I was doing really well with my running and most days would do 5k -7k this however stopped in November when a) I noticed my hair was falling out through my fasting, so I was so stressed and b) the weather - I would leave work at 5pm and it would be dark and raining loads and I just lost all motivation.
Pls may I ask how you guys are motivated on a cold wet dark night lol to go running on your own at times.
I’ve started to put weight back on already - it’s amazing how quick it happens!!!
My 2 inch hip loss has now gone back on - I feel so low about it but trying to be positive.

First I have good gear; merino underlayer, lightweight waterproof jacket, thick winter tights, hat over ears and good head torch. The main issue isn’t the running, it is getting changed and out of the door! So best if you can change before you leave work or as soon as you enter the house, and get straight out for your run. Once I am out there and moving it can be throwing it down for all I care! Maybe all easier said than done with your commitments though. Hope you find a way through. 😊
Great advise thank you and yes you are right. When I’ve been out and it’s rained it hasn’t bothered me! It’s just when it’s lashing down from the offset ha
Just consider it a short blip, try not to be too down. Posting this means you're already trying to make a positive change.
Even just one run a week at the weekend would be a start - then at least you have more choice of daylight hours. Maybe vary your route, stop measuring distance/time and run for pleasure - that may help the stress levels too. Midweek, would it be easier to try a short but hard run - maybe fast or hilly - it would still be dark, but it would all be over more quickly! The days are getting longer, if you can just keep your hand in a little to tide you over the next month or so, then I'm sure things will be brighter. Good luck.
I think your mind has already turned an important corner 🙂. You'll get through this and looking back it will seem a much smaller issue than it does now. We'll all be here cheering you on when you make it through the door for your first run of 2020! New start 🙂
Thank you darlin - thing is I have heaploads going on but I’m trying my damn hardest to be positive! I’m also booking up for a day learning bushcraft skills - hope to god I never need them lol and other activities such as paddle boarding! Must try and be positive 2020 here I come 😉
Oh no, that's not good. But on a positive note, you're clearly not happy about it and aim to get back into running again. That's great news!
However, on the motivation front, I'm not going to be able to help with the cold, wet dark nights. You see, that's my favourite time to run! I know, how mad am I??
I love torrential rain, I love the solitude of the dark, and I get blooming warm, so I like the cold. In fact, I'm not really looking forward to running in summer!
When I'm running along and the rain is dripping off the peak of my baseball cap, that's when I'm most happy.
Go on, get out there and do. I know you want to, you just need a little nudge 😁
I couldn't run with my boy. He be off in different direction chasing leaves, then a bird and then a motorbike. Before you know it, he'd be half way to another city and completely lost 😄😄😄
Sorry to see that you've hit a bit of a motivation brick wall, it looks like you were doing really well up to that. One of my reasons for getting up an hour early so that I can go out for a run before work is that I know if I left it until later I'd have thought of enough reasons why I shouldn't do it! (Another reason behind this is that it is still dark & there's no-one around to see me!) I've not experienced extreme cold or wet yet, but keeping cool once I start is my problem. I wear a lightweight waterproof (cycling) jacket, just plain normal jogging bottoms, with a running hat & gloves. Usually my hat is the first thing to come off & go into my pocket, then it's my gloves, finally the jacket zip comes down more & more to let out the steam! I've only got to the start of week 4 so far, so sometimes the gloves have gone back on for a while during the walking sessions as I don't want to cool down too much either, so it is a bit of a balancing act! Stick at it & I am sure you'll get back up to full steam before you know it!
Our terrier is actually a Parsons, so comes with additional issues, but as you say, we digress! I usually get up for work just after 6 AM, so running days means I'm up at 5 (but trying not to wake up until 6, after I've got back home!) I do live in the UK (Leicestershire) but haven't been out for about a month, I have experienced a bit of rain, and frosts, but nothing extreme yet (I'm sure that time will come). More experienced runners have commented on here that once they're wet, they're wet and it doesn't seem to matter, I am sure I'll find out soon enough. As to your question about bridge to 5k, sorry I haven't a clue...
Ahh yes I couldn’t see the legs!!! Little beauty of a dog 🐕 5am?!!!!!!!! Oh wow I think I may fall asleep at my desk!! How do you do it lol
Will you find it hard if you haven’t ran for a month?
Yes I think I will post about the bridge ha
It is always challenging at this time of year... I have to say however that I am a fan of the wintery conditions; it makes me feel tough, like a badass warrior (which is as far away from my nonrunning self as is possible!). One day this week it was below freezing here and my morning run was a joyous experience as I saw an owl, deer and hares all out looking for food on a crisp and frosty day, with the sun hanging low in the sky .
As Linda advises use days off work for the main, longer run and then do some other thing (like speed work or intervals) midweek. I have noticed that even in the two weeks since midwinter, there is an evident increase in the length of the day. That's the other great thing about regularly being outdoors, you are so much more in contact with the changing environment.
Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather. Maybe lay your gear out so it's ready when you get home and perhaps avoid sitting on the couch before the run.
Don't be hard on yourself, this is not a linear process but a learning one. Next winter you will be much better prepared. Good luck!
Good thought - however no as I only get 30 minutes and work in a office.
This is the thing we all get sweaty including the head so to go in the morning before work I would have to get up at silly time to wash my hair etc before work. I’m tired getting up at 7am lol I am a single person with a teenager so have to do everything myself lol
You've already had lots of good advice so far and I'm with a few of them on the weather front , I go out no matter what's it's like . In November where I am in Scotland we had a few days it was -4 and I loved it and if you know Scotland , rain just seems to happen a lot.
Even if you can fit in 1 or 2 short runs during the week and keep your longer run until the weekend.
Seriously now......you are the 3rd person with a JRT oh my days love it 😻 thing is tbh I am going through the change and also trying to balance everything and so what comes with that is anxiety and feeling very low. So I think without realising it when the dark and wet nights hit us, I just wanted to stay indoors and hide. Then so cross with myself as I was doing fantastic and now I’m gonna have to start all over grrr
Thank you - yes I will look at it as a positive thing 😉
Well Buddy looks awesome and it’s a given isn’t it he’s a jack lol
One day I will have another ❤️
Don't ever be disappointed in yourself. We all have low times and moments but so many people are here to help. I personally prefer late dark and wet/cold runs as I feel it's a challenge. If I get through it then I can run through anything. Keep on keeping on, whatever that looks like. But above all be proud, you are going places. My favourite saying is, 'You can't get from A-Z without going through the alphabet.' In that alphabet we face a multitude of challenges but we're all here rooting for you.
You really will and I look forward to hearing all about your progress. Don't pressure yourself at any stage. You'll get back and it'll feel better this time around.
Move to Australia! I am lucky enough to not really have to deal with the dark, wet days, heat is more an issue for me.
But I always find that if I really don't want to head out, the best thing I can do is to just put my running gear on anyway. Ill tell myself that Ill just plod out the door and take the dog on a short walk. But 100% of the time so far I have ended up running anyway I mean once you've gone to all the effort of gearing up it would be a waste not to!
Anyway happy running, Im sure you'll get back into the groove in no time
No they don’t and I admire you all when it’s dark cold and lashing it down that you still run!! I suppose for me I really enjoy the running but there are hardcore runners that no weather will stop them and I don’t think I’m one of them lol
When I’m better - I’m full of cold at the moment I will start again.
The one positive thing about being off sick is that I’ve met some really motivating and great people by having the time to join up and read all your messages x
