Listening when running for amusement and distraction

This morning (week 7 run 1) I hit on a really great solution of what to listen to when running. Even though I like music, it always makes me smile to listen to comedy. So I put one of those great really clever, witty half hour comedy shows from Radio 4 Extra on BBC Sounds, then put on the C25K app. Every so often Jo Whiley came through with a little comment on timing or encouragement, but otherwise I didn't look at my phone from start to finish. I just ran along listening to Mark Watson and laughing! This might not work for everyone, but I thought I would put it out there, in case the idea finds a kindred soul!

Thanks for the tip, I've been thinking about trying this myself. Although I'm not so far through the programme as you I found listening a distraction, but not in a helpful way. I found that it made me run too fast as I instinctively ran to the musical beat. Since then have just listened to the app and a (very slow) metronome but think a distraction will help me once I get onto longer runs.

I would say give it a go! Running to a slow metronome would make me feel like I am on a death march, but we're all different, I suppose! Some of the comments below give details of lovely light, funny podcasts! Or there is always stuff like having R2 Breakfast Show on in the background; a bit of music, bit of amusement, bit of news, if variety appeals?

I’m a big fan of podcasts as well. Most radio shows have a podcast attached featuring ‘best of’ content. Now the biggest problem I have is people seeing me laughing as I’m running!!!

Ah, yes, good point! ‘Do the right thing’ and ‘My dad wrote a porno’ have me in stitches. I must listen to one of those on Thursday!

Try Clinton Baptiste as well. He’s the psychic from Phoenix Nights!

i am a r4+ fan :)

Oh yes the radio or podcasts are great. I listen to audio books and sometimes its the lure of the book that oiks me out the door :) It does not make me fast but does mean that I can run a long way without boredom setting in.

I like music too and I ran 10 miles with a spotify mix. Other times, nice to run without distraction; just listening to the world around you. I think it's good to mix it up!
