Another Parkrun PB

Ooh, that looks good doesn’t it but adding a bit of context - my starting bar was incredibly low! But ParkRun said I did it in 49:08 which is a whole 19 seconds quicker than my last PB! Woohoo! Mr Garmin said I did it in 48:48 which is even better! Perhaps my target of 40 minutes is achievable after all! Happy slow running peeps!!

I did congratulate you last week on your PB then saying that I didn't think it would be too long before you can get a sub 45 minutes 5k, congratulations again on getting a PB, you are becoming a member of all those runners who get a PB at every parkrun, I can't say that as my second parkrun was one second slower than my first one, for you, onwards and upwards to another PB at your next parkrun. 😊 🏃🏾

Thank you AM! I’m hoping to break 45 minutes at some point in the not too distant future and then we’ll see! Don’t think it’ll be a PB each Parkrun - apart from anything there’s always the chance of going backwards!

Thank you W&S - the only problem now is keeping it up!

I’ve found that when it’s done once it can be done again and although sometimes it feels like a slow snail it’s faster than it used to be

Happy Sunday

So encouraged by your post

I haven’t dared turn up for a park run yet - I am a 10 minute per km girl at present so more plod than run... still very pleased I can do even that and not suffer with arthritis pain

In fact I semi to have fewer aches and pains as a result of being a little fitter..

Might not get to park run this side of Christmas but def early in new year ... somewhere where no one knows me!

Park run is such a lovely encouraging community that you won't feel at all nervous once you've done it. Just smug generally! I'm always towards the back but the experience is really rewarding. Find a flat, pretty one!

Well done you. Just aborted my training half way through. The weather is horrendous and rain getting heavier and heavier. Did most of it though.

Thanks Ashcraig - like you I’m not really keen on running in the rain but am determined to give it a whirl this winter. But I won’t be going out when it’s icy! Happy running!

Thank you Mm! Like you I’m just happy I can even do this running thing at 66 and it’s never really been about speed but more about ‘improvement’. When you do get to a parkrun I’m sure you’ll find others who are similar to you; at ours there are walkers too - some who can walk faster than me (when I’m running!) and some who don’t . I usually tell the tail walker I’ll be slow, not sure why - I just like to give fair warning! I usually run on my own so I’m some ways I like to be at the back of the pack - on my own but with a group! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, you could always volunteer a bit as well which is fun. I almost enjoy that more than running it! Sorry - long post there but if you want to know anything else about parkrun as a slow runner, PM me and I’ll try and answer!

Well done OGR. I’d say focus on getting comfortable running the distance regularly, without worrying about pace. Some weeks you will feel better than others, some weeks the conditions will be better than others, some periods will see improvement whilst other periods go backwards. Nice to see you running it.

Written from experience. My first parkrun (in 2015, when I was 58) was 45 minutes something, my second 43 something. It didn’t take me long to get under 40 and I was convinced I would easily get to 35. I got to 37 something in early 2016 but then had periods of going backwards and forwards. Then the injury in late 2017, and post-recovery I was down to 47 minutes. I have managed a couple at around 40 minutes late last year / early this year but my best are now 42 minutes. Something tells me I won’t ever run it under 40 again.

OldgirlrunsGraduate in reply toCoddfish

Well I can’t keep up with you and I have tried! So for now I’ll just stick with keeping you in my sights and work on times later!

Well done, my first parkrun was 51 minutes after a year I have got my PB down to 43, so keep going you will get to your target. Even if you never reach the target, the journey is great, filled with fun and new friends. Parkrun is one of the best things to happen to me, I hope you keep going regardless of the time achieved. If you have weeks you can't run, volunteer it is a wonderful community and is good for your mental health as well as your physical. Congratulations again on your PB. X
