Plantar Fasciitis

Had a week off from running due to chesty cough and hoping my feet will benefit from the rest. Have had a relapse of plantar fasciitis, something that started way before I began running and and I felt had cleared up. But it seems to have returned with a vengeance! Does anyone else run with this condition?

Yes I do.

I do exercises;

1. stand with your feet parallel facing forwards (i.e. toes pointing straight ahead not out to the side like a ballet dancer) and then stand up on my toes, hold position for a few seconds and back down again.

2. While sitting, foot up and rotate in both directions to strengthen ankles.

I roll the arch of my foot and the underside of my heel on a tennis ball - that has been very helpful for me and I sometimes do that for quite a while if I am a passenger in a car or doing anything when I am sitting down for a time. Another suggestion is to keep an unopened tin of beans ( or similar- not an aluminium drinks tin), in the fridge and roll your foot on that so you get a cold massage. I also discovered that a long soak in hot water is very helpful.

Sometimes people are advised to rest it for a while, so checking with a doctor or physio would be sensible.

Good luck, I hope it settles soon. 😄

Thanks for your suggestions. I already do some of these but have also started wearing compression sleeves, using ice packs on my heels and have bought new running shoes. Last time I had it, it took 3.5 years to recover so I’m trying anything that might speed things along.

Good luck in your recovery too.

I have suffered with this for the last 15years or so. I taken up running very recently to try and get rid of it. I’m hoping if I can loose a few pounds from running then in turn I’m hoping it will help me feet.

15 years is a long time to suffer sore feet....I hope you recover soon. Good luck!

Hi there. I was in a similar situation, had it in the past and then whallop it caught me.

Would advise exercises on the NHS website, lots of rolling and ice on the heel as soon as you get in from a run. I ended up going to a sports therapist who picked up immediately that I was in the wrong shoes... pretty gutting as I had done the right thing with gait analysis etc. Had a few weeks of rest, massage and ultrasound treatment but am building up slowly and so far so good. Good luck with it, it’s a beast!! But not running is not an option any more 🙃

Totally agree! Even if I didn’t run, I still walk my large dog twice a day so resting my feet is not an option. Just have to get on with it and hope that self help remedies will do the trick.

Good luck

My son has it & he’s a fit, healthy weight 13 yr old. He’s had it for at least a year now & it really causes a lot of discomfort when he’s at school. Been told to do foot exercises, given ibuprofen gel & rest. Also told to wear insoles. If no better in 2 months, which I know it won’t be 🙄 then they’ll consider physio.

So sorry to hear of someone so young to be suffering with this condition, I hope he recovers soon. I have found the best relief comes from rolling a spikey ball (from Amazon) from toes to heels for a few minutes each day and also resting my heels on a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel for a few minutes when they feel hot.

Hi My son had this (13). Went to podiatrist on NHS and prescribed medical grade insoles to correct his pronation (think that's the word - it means he walks on the inside of his feet and that puts a lot of stress on his ankles - very painful). Anyhow, that was 3-4 years ago and he's had no trouble since. Still wears the insoles - we change them as his feet grow.
