Week 5! But some pain is setting in. There have been niggles along the way, including numbness in one foot towards the end of a session, but so far so good. I invested in good shoes from a running store (no gait analysis though) and have been resting appropriately but with the increases to 5 min and then 8 min, I am still getting the numbness but now a bit of pain in the shins. Minor, just not sure if some is to be expected or if the increases this week are putting me on track for an injury? I definitely can’t lose this wonderful thing that is happening to me!

I’m no expert, but numbness doesn’t sound right to me. I think I’d get advice if I was you, from a sports physio or your GP. As you say, you don’t want to lose your running through injury! Just one thought - might you be lacing too tight? I did at first, bizarrely just on one foot! Good luck 🤞🏻

Thanks, Jazzy. Could well be. I keep loosening the laces but might still be doing it ‘wrong’! It never lasts long and is kicking in later and later during a run. My calves can often be quite tight, I wonder if that can restrict circulation...

I really don’t know. I’d go back to the shop and ask them to check the fit and how you’re lacing. Failing that, I’d get professional advice myself, a sports physio if possible.

I have a cousin who is a Kinesiologist. I’ll ‘run’ this by him. 😃

Did the shop check the fit of your shoes? They should be bigger than your street shoes.

Definitely check you're not lacing too tightly as suggested by Jazzyrunner. Is the numbness over the top of the foot or in the toes?

Shin pain is often due to over striding so just take care to make sure your front foot is landing directly under you not forward. There's lots of stretching and massage you can do to help shin pain.

Thanks, JoJo. Yes, fit was checked and a full size up than normal in a Saucony. The numbness seems to be pretty much the whole foot - possibly starting at the bottom? Not specifically toes or top. Have been really trying not to overstride or go too fast but will also keep those in mind and will check out stretches and massage. Cheers!

Strange. If they were a recent purchase might be worth popping into the shop with them to have them double check the fit. Saucony size small so for me I need 1.5 sizes up (4.5 street, 6 Saucony) as they come up smaller than say Brooks.

If you have a sports therapist nearby a foot massage might give some clues or if it persists might be worth a chat with your gp.

Fingers crossed for you 🤞🏻

Thanks again. Shoes generally feel great but I hear what you are saying and good to know how their sizing works for you!

Sorry to hear your problems. Again, check not too tight, are you wearing supportive socks, the same ones you were fitted with. Stretch after each run. Good luck

Thanks, Granny. I am indeed in good socks. Will try better stretching. Maybe it will help!

I found my new socks to be the problem with numbness and tingling in my left foot as I neared the end of each run. I changed my socks to a different brand and haven't had the problem since.
