I decided to take up running to help me with weight loss.
A huge step for someone who, at 57, hadn't done any formal exercise for around 40 years.
After a bit of a false start when I hurt my knee (according to our OH nurse in work that was because I was carrying too much weight), today I have completed the Couch to 5K running programme.
On top of that, I have lost just over 4 stone in weight.
Guess that means that I can now officially call myself a runner. Anyone who knows me from school days and recalls my “love” of PE will understand just how big a statement that is for me to make!!!
Not stopping there though. Last night I signed up to do the Cardiff 10K on 1 September so will be working towards that now. I intend to run it to support Kidney Research and will post details of how people can support me in that when I have it.

Congratulations and very well done on your graduation from the C25K plan and on your 4 stone weight loss. That’s fantastic, you must look and feel like a new person. I’m delighted for you.
Spend a few weeks running 5K 3 times per week before you move up to 10K. Don’t try to do too much too soon. There is nothing wrong with running and walking your 10K event. I’m running 2 years now since graduating and I know how easy it is to get an injury from trying to do too much too soon. It takes about 8-9 weeks to increase from 5K to 10K and you should be running 5K 3 times per week for at least 1-2 months before moving up to 10K. Personally I love 5K, it’s a perfect distance. Get comfortable at it first.
Thank you. Combination of walking and running is certainly the plan - the event has a 2 hour cut-off so think that is doable. I currently run about 7K in 50 minutes as I have been trying to stretch the C25K programme
I have about 7 weeks to the event so hopefully will be close to the distance but not a show stopper if I can't run it all
Your well ahead of the curve and will easily complete the 10K in less than 90 mins even as you are. 7K is a good distance, it is helpful for working on your 5K stamina and leaves a 10K within easy reach with a couple of extra weeks training.
I think I’ll do my 7K loop this evening as I’ve been inspired.😀
Wow well done you - I graduated today too - I like your idea of signing up to a new challenge - I don’t want to stop running but am aware life quickly gets in the way unless you have a clear goal - well done
Definitely. I needed to have something to aim for to stop me slipping back to my bad old ways. Having publicly posted it on my Facebook page as well then my friends will hold me to account if I don't work towards it
Good plan - I’m going to keep up with Park Run and try to improve my speed ... I was 114 out of 133... just the walkers behind me BUT I’m beyond proud that I did it
You sound like me. 57 overweight, unfit 🙂. C25k saved my sorry ass I lost just under five stones. Phew 😁. What a relief. It’s never crept back on either as I’ve kept running
Good luck. Keep slowly progressing. No rush, no pressure 😃
