Has anyone tried Keto, or a low carb way of eating while still running? How did you find it?

I did low carb last year. Had keto flu etc and never had any energy. I did lose the weight I wanted to though. Anyway, two holidays and xmas meant I stopped. Gained the half stone I had lost, so thought I would try again. This time, it was much easier and no lethargicness. Back down to my goal weight, and jogging before breakfast, something I could never have done before 🏃‍♀️😊

Yes, of course I should have used one of those forums, sorry Floss.

Don't apologise...I just meant it would maybe be more useful. Xxx

I’ve been on keto for about 14 months now. I find it OK but I was on it for seven months before I started, C25k. I think loosing four stone before running helped lower the impact. I now run up to a half marathon and I don’t think my diet has a negative impact.

Do you rn in the mornings? If so, what do you have for breakfast?

I'm a morning runner, can't get my head around not having porridge...but I'm going to give it a go next time.

Omelette on most days. Chopped up Bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, cheese and 2-3 eggs. Or a frattata using any of the left over vegetables from the night before. Occasionally I opt for kippers or boiled eggs for variety. I wouldn’t recommend running on empty, I used find if I hadn’t eaten I would tank about 3.5k into a park run.

Hello. I am doing low carb. Previously I was always hungry and often felt dizzy and weak and yukky. This is a revelation as I go out first thing after just a coffee and some water, and do my C25K (only week3) and feel fine.

Hi Curlygurly2, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone just starting c25k, as it's quite likely that you will feel more tired the first couple of weeks while your body adjusts, and also starting 2 new things at the same time might be overwhelming, but you are already a graduate, so I don't think it's a problem to give it a go, and then evaluate how you feel.

Yes, had porridge this morning and ran 5 KM, I'll have eggs and bacon tomorrow and try the same run, see how I feel!

I agree. Probably a bit much together. I was on LCHF for wuite a while before starting this programme.

I looked up LCHF, and that sounds a bit more like what I'm actually doing. The Keto websites are full of people who take it rather seriously (in my humble opinion) and always have less than 20 G of carb, and use those sticks to test their wee....bit much for me really, I've only got a bit to lose.

Lol yes keto stix. And that is hard work. I just make a conscious effort not to have bread or pasta or rice or potatoes. Gosh I am hungry now lol. I do check carbs on any packaging too. But stick with eggs, meat and fish, and veg that grow above the ground, and you can't go too wrong. I also like Greek yogurt and berries. Yum! Diet Doctor is a great site.

I have just a few KG to lose, another 3 and I'll be happy, 6 and I'll be ecstatic. Yes, DD is brilliant, I've made several of the recipes already.

I've been trying to think about what I can do to lose weight again. I did Weightwatchers in 2004 and lost 2 stone, but I've just reached the point where I started again - I suppose it did take 15 years to go back on! I'm not running much due to lack of motivation as much as anything - I can't really use my demented parents as an excuse any more as I'm only going up once or twice a week now. I am drinking way too much alcohol - usually only 1 day off per week and now I've got a beautiful deck with amazing views we have got into the habit of beer/wine o'clock at the end of the working day and it usually leads to 2 or 3 drinks per night, followed by nibbling. Having lost the weight before, I know what to do, but I'm just finding the willpower a problem at the moment. When my husband is away it's easy, but once he hits the bottle I find it hard to refuse just a small one then …. I've been watching Liz Kershaw on twitter and she's lost 3 stone in the last year by doing low (but not no) carbs. Bad news for me as I'm just getting quite good at making sourdough bread in the Aga! I'm going to have a bash at 5:2 again. I feel uncomfortable, slow and bloated and all my clothes are too tight. Everyone says I look ok, but I just feel sluggish and know I need to do something about it. Curly, let me know what you do and how it goes. I must log into this forum more often - it might motivate me to put my running gear on more often. At the mo I'm lucky if I go once a week. Silly, as I love it when I get out there, and the views on my runs are stunning, especially in this lovely weather. I was going to go out this morning, but we had a bit of a Pimms night last night with our son home from uni, and I rather overdid it (again). I shall probably go out for a brisk walk later to atone for my misbehaviour and to catch a few rays while I wait for the yummy bread to rise!

Sue! How lovely to hear from you again!!

I put on about 5 KG last year almost overnight with my cancer treatment, Tamoxifen tummy I call it as it all went round the middle. I've spoken to numerous ladies who have had the same thing, so I know I'm not imagining it. It's proving very hard to shift. I saw the oncologist in November, he said there wasn't much point me taking the hormone treatment as my risk of recurrence is so small, and if I'm suffering any side effects at all he said I shouldn't take it any more. Well, the weight isn't the only side effect, but the others I really don't care about, it's just the weight that's getting me down. I feel it's affecting my running...

He said it would take at least three months for the effects to dissipate, well, it's been quite a bit more than that. I'm still getting the hot flushes and leg cramps etc so I guess it's still working in my body. I've tried "Lean in 15" and though I loved the recipes, I can't say it really made a big difference to my weight, and it's all very similar to how I eat normally anyway. So - I'm trying Keto, I reckon a BIG change might sort of jump start my metabolism....That's my theory anyway....

I've only just started, I found a two week challenge on Facebook where they give you all the info, recipes and even shopping lists, so I thought I'd give it try. This morning I just couldn't imagine going out without my usual porridge, but I'm going to try eggs and bacon next time and see how it goes. I'm managing to drink a lot less by having it with Perrier, and you can have wine on Keto as long as it's dry. My kind of diet!!

I'm still plodding away, about 20 -30 KM per week, just like I've always done, but it's hard these days, and I'm a good 5 minutes or more slower over 5 KM than I was before. Hey ho, i'm still here, I'm 60 next year, so I don't expect too much...

I'll let you know how I get on. If you'd like to keep in touch, I'd love to chat with you again....I'll give you my facebook or my hotmail if you like....

Big kiss xx
