So, I was all set to go out just after 9, which became 10 and by 2 I was out of the house!!
Target 6k. Off I go down a tail I last walked 10 years ago, nice undulating fields, pace is comfortable, and I have a nice first kilometre. The undulation starts to take its toll I’m slowing down... I’m wet though by 2k and not a drop of it is rain... then I start to see a problem looming, it seems in the last 10 years a new hill has grown all by itself. 3k in and I’m up for the challenge but boy did it hurt... of course, when my now super slow beetroot face starts to see over the hill, it then dawns on me that I could have turned round and run back and got my 6k done... nice view though... down and kissing the ground is in my head, that’s what I’m doing, but I’m feeling more like I’m going to face plant the ground any second now. 5k done and I’m feeling like I did when my daughter coached me on Tuesday... so much as I wanted to quit, I figured I’d run 3k from this tired then, and today I only have to do one. Last bit is on the road and the little black dot that is my car is growing nicely... no speed up for this finish... I pop the back door open and stagger the 100 yards from the 6k point and just collapse in a sweaty mess in my middle seats. Took me maybe 10 minutes to fully recover... much water drank, then up and down the lane again on foot because I hadn’t raised my legs and I hadn’t done cooldown.
No sign of the promised rain... no doubt it’ll chuck it down soon now I don’t want it to.
Enjoyability of this run... 3/10... pride that I just managed it 11!
Rather than post a picture of this sweaty mess, I thought I’d choose one of someone who can run hills without medical units on standby

😂 did you pass? My family were convinced my Nanna only passed first time because the examiner feared he may get her again... a week later she parked the car perfectly in the garage... the only thing she didn’t do was open the door first!
A great post from you. I am so happy that you 'enjoyed' your 6K run, as far as the rain, well I will tell you that where I live in Cumbernauld, that's 13 miles north east of Glasgow it started raining at 3pm. I didn't realise that Miss UNM was your coach on Tuesday, at least if she becomes your Personal Trainer (PT) it should save you some money, some PT charge as much as £30 or more a hour, although she might ask you for more pocket money. 😊
Well done UNM! You sound like me running up hills! I was doing exactly what you described at a humid and windy parkrun a few weeks ago with my dog walking alongside. Yes. Walking! 🤦♀️
It’s good fun so long as the back markers want to be there! So far I’ve not been lucky that way, then it’s sprint time... think I’ll take a baseball bat with me.
Love your post UNM! It may feel like those hills nearly killed you today, but next time you take them on, you will be stronger for it, and stronger still on your third. It’s a promise!
😂. I wouldn’t know! I haven’t watched since union went pro really... I liked the spectator friendly violence of league... played both and union has lots in scrums and mauls, but the fans don’t see it... my blood-thirst lead me to hockey 😂
Well done though on the 6k- even though it sounded painful- you finished it. I know from experience that I don’t always enjoy every run but as you say - the sense of achievement more than makes up for it.
Makes a change for us not to get it... just arriving at juniors as is the drizzle
Great post and are you sure that’s not you and your just being too modest ?😃! Anyway the rain question! It was with me this morning (Saturday).☹️💦🏃♀️🌧🤣🤣
I have had an idea, as I tend to walk on my rest days, I'm gonna walk the route the day before, then I'll have definitive proof that hills are going all over the place!
Indeed!! I was gonna run today, think I’ll just make it a walk day instead, I’ll have to hit the forest park near me and just focus on the hillier side of the street, the only consolation I can draw from the race yesterday was a vast proportion of the runners had that look of thank Jesus that one’s done as they crossed the line. I have another 2 weeks to get my act together for the next race, I’ll focus on hills and get this, I could almost lay money on it that this will be the flattest run yet😩😩😩😩
But of course... some how these guys know if you’ve prepped for hills and can have huge ones delivered the night before the race! I am thinking of the high peak marathon one year, just need 3 other complete nutters to form a team 😂
