20 reasons not to run

There's probably many more than that. Too hot, too cold, too achy, too early too late... My favourite: can't be arsed.

So the thing is, how can you cut down on those feeble excuses, and, in the words of Nike, just do it?

Here's a few suggestions:

1. Have shorts / shirt shoes at the ready, hung up behind bathroom door in my case.

2. Run from the door. If the car is involved, there's a whole set of reasons not to go.

3. Ignore the weather. You will need a shower whatever, so just get out there.

4. Record runs using any number of apps. My favourite is Runmeter. Very motivating.

5. Ignore any feelings of stiffness or tiredness. I bet you will have forgotten about them by the time you get going.

6. Take some music / radio on the smartphone. I listened to Yes Minister this morning. Brilliant.

7. It must be great to have a running buddy, but I couldn't face hanging around for someone else to be ready.

There must be more - feel free to add.

8. Adopt a proven training programme that makes you run regularly, and believe in it, and yourself.

I agree with all.

Podcasts help a lot more than music. I listened to "my dad wrote a porn" and ran further without realizing!!! I will try yes minister- thank you.

I also find that even just dressing to go running puts me in a powerful frame of mind.

Also, any app that allows to track progress motivates me. Tracking makes me feel proud and ready to tackle even more!

8. Have set days to run, (e.g. Monday, Wednesday & Friday), then stick to those days come hell or high water.

It's the hardest part of going cycling together. Singing "why am I waiting" never goes down well!!

'Just Think Of Health Benefits, For Crying Out Loud' (the way I'd normally say it is way less structured and polite, but the message would hit home regardless, believe me)
