So 5 weeks into the programme I took a week off as I went on holiday to Lanzarote. I fully intended to run on holiday but a few days in I was in agony and could not put any pressure on my heel without being in severe pain. After a couple of days of thinking maybe I had been stung by something or had maybe a small piece of glass in it (but could not see anything) I had to concede defeat and go to the local hospital. After much discussions with doctors they x-rayed my foot and turns out I have a heel spur. I am gutted. So I came back with a lovely pair of Spanish NHS Crutches and am in agony. My GP depressed me even further by telling me there wasn't much I could do about it except stay off my foot for 6 weeks (that went down well with work!) and possibly have a steroid injection which will be incredibly painful and may or may not work! I did a bit of reading up on it and it turns out the build up of calcium is due to excessive standing, wearing the wrong shoes and of course running! Although my build up would have been over months not the 5 weeks I have been doing the plan - however the running would have brought it on. I am seeing my physio next week as I have also read heel spurs are often a result of tight calf muscles and foot muscles. As well as taking some supplements and some Epsom salt baths daily to try and speed up the healing and help myself. I really want to get back into the running but I'm really nervous about it as my condition will never go away, but the pain and inflammation should reduce. Sorry this is a bit of a whinge and a rant but I genuinely am not sure how to start again when it does finally recover, or what to change when I do to stop this happening again? It's so very painful I am not sure I can go through it again!

Crikey! What a bloomin awful thing to happen.

The physio (is it nhs) should be able to put things into perspective for you and hopefully get you on the road to recovery. Once you get the help you need you feel more positive

It might not be as black as has been painted. fingers crossed 🤞

Thank you! My physio is through my private healthcare which is a godsend as it's expensive otherwise! I'm hoping he can help me get me on the road to recovery. I try to be positive most of the time but after being on such a high from actually being able to do the first 5 weeks of the programme, and actually wanting to run it's hit me strangely hard! Plus it ruined our holiday which was supposed to be a nice relaxing break for my boyfriend who is recovering from cancer! Sometimes life just kicks you in the balls and you have to dig deep and get up again! Like you rightly say hopefully it won't be as black as it's been painted. I had to laugh at my GP who said "well they don't operate in our area because it's not deemed a necessary operation" - err I can't actually walk but no it's not necessary at all! Lol. Thanks again - just having a bad day, will pick myself up and move on eventually!!

Once the inflammation is under control the pain will ease off. You can take a couple neurofen etc before bed. They are good at pain relief but the anti-inflammatory bit takes time to kick in, and you have to keep taking them. I got some powerful ones from the GP to tide me over til i got to see a physiotherapist

Running is all in the calves They say 😃. Weak calves and feet can be worked on successfully with physio at home Hopefully, that’s all you need to set you right. You have to keep it up and do the exercises, keep your appointments and get well.

Keep us posted with your progress. The injury bench is a lonely place so don’t suffer in silence

It’s such a shame your holiday was spoiled. I hope you”ll both soon be back to health💪🙂👍

Thank you! Great advice! And yes the injury bench is not very pleasant at all! I will allow myself a little pity party today and then start afresh tomorrow :)
