Feeling deflated

I have just ran for 25 mins but I know it wasn't the full time as I had to stop a couple of times as my legs felt like lead.I was running on the playing fields for the first time and found it harder I walked for 1 minute to help, currently I'm trying hard to increase my time to 28 mins but get to 18 mins and want to stop! The mental pressure to keep going is awful!!!! Anyone else had this?

I don't feel elated today like I usually do.... Is this normal??!!

Sounds like you could get pushing too hard. It’s supposed to be done slowly which buys you time and puff

Slow the while thing down, relax, be a bit Zen, and go again. This time slower. If you need to stop to catch your breath for a minute til then do so. Chances are if you are going slowly enough you won’t need to

Slow running, and your rest days, build legs. Your lung power will increase bit by bit as you keep running but there is no short cut 🙂

Keep plugging away and you’ll be fine 🙂👍

Hi Flopil, I just went out and done (tried) the infamous wk5r3 and I stopped about 13 mins, at one point I told myself I’d let myself cheat for a minute if I get to 15 but I didn’t even manage that! I walked for about 2 mins, caught my breath and continued the rest. All in all, it’s not terrible but I was disappointed with myself that I didn’t finish it as the plan. Don’t be too hard on yourself, the headwind was pretty strong today!

I'm at the same stage as you and would say it's perfectly normal :-)

Sometimes the runs go well, sometimes not so well. I got beaten by a hill when I tried a different route a couple of days ago and didn't complete my run. You tried something new today and it didn't quite work out but look at the positives you still ran for a really long time!

As for stepping up to 28 mins I think it really is a psychological thing rather than a physical thing. I use an interval timer rather than the app - mainly because I only own a Nokia brick :-) - but have found that just running until I hear the beep rather than knowing how long I have left to be hugely helpful. I read a post on here earlier where someone had completed the 28 min run which had defeated them many times by setting the app to Week 5 run 3, running through the warm down then keeping going for a further 3 mins. A neat pychological trick!

One thing you definitely need to try and do is to take the pressure out of it. I know it's always the advice given on here but slowing right down will also help. Even if you don't feel elated today you have got out there and given it a go and that's something to be very proud of x

These later runs are hard work. Well done for admitting it!

If you are running for the first time on playing fields, where the ground is absorbing your energy rather than bouncing you back into the next step, it’s not really a surprise you found it harder. And there is a huge wind around today.

Don’t beat yourself up but do try to slow down your pace a little on the next run. Well done for not just giving up entirely!

How easy it is to run does seem to change on different surfaces. That's come as a bit of surprise to me for some reason?!

I've just finished Week 7 and when I did the runs on the pavement it was definitely less of a struggle than when I went through the local woods.

I feel for you, as the urge to stop mid-session is high on these longer runs. I have to agree with others that slowing right down is the best approach. It certainly helped me.

Don't be too despondent. Think about how you were on Week 1. I struggled with 60 seconds back then; perhaps you were the same? Think how well you've done and then put your bad experience down to just that - experience. Next time will be different. :)

Thank you everyone for your advice I'm feeling better quicker now as I did used to ache all day in my legs but not now so I know I'm making progress with my stamina.
