I’m going to do this. I’ve NEVER run in my life and am 55 so am not expecting miracles but I think I need the right shoes to avoid giving up due to heel pain.
A few months ago I developed plantar fasciitis in my right foot for the first time. Stretches and orthopaedic insoles have helped dramatically but my heel still hurts if I walk around barefoot.
Any advice?

My son gets this and it’s very frustrating because he loves cross country running. He has found that swimming really helps as it supports and builds muscle, increases his stamina but keeps the weight off his feet. Unfortunately he has to rest from running when it’s bad but I can definitely recommend swimming.
As for shoes, anything that supports the arch really. There are a lot of posts on here about getting your gait analysis done and properly fitted running shoes. I wear Birkenstock slippers at home which are very good for supporting the arch.
I’d recommend going to a specialist running shop and asking their advice, so you can try things on and see what feels most comfortable. If you’re like many of us, it’s a very daunting idea - but certainly my local shop are nothing but friendly and helpful (and no, I really don’t look like anyone’s idea of a fit and athletic type!)
So start with a gait analysis from a good running shop.
As a PF sufferer myself (mine is under control thanks to a terrific physio), I would also say, tell the running shop you suffer PF. A 12mm heel to toe drop is recommended for PF suffers, I actually use 10mm drop and have had no problems for the past few years, I personally wouldn’t ever use a lesser drop shoe than that though.
Keep up with the exercises, I do them regularly and after every run. Plus, never wear completely flat shoes. I don’t use insoles in my running shoes as they have support and structure, however I do wear insoles in walking shoes. This is an individual thing so find what suits you.
Thank you. Really interesting. I’m glad I asked as I felt a bit silly worrying about shoes when I’ve not run a step yet but it clearly is really important based on what everyone is kindly saying here 👍🏼
I got this when wearing flat shoes . I had previously done the C25K program and after a period not running, I restarted the program . I think running helped me get over it. But I took it slow. Get your shoes fitted in specialised running shop that allows you to try them out. And explain your concerns. Then make sure you continue stretching . Take any insoles to the shop to get them fitted.
As above. Go to a specialist running shop that does gait analysis (not a discount sports shed) and tell them your about your condition. The alternative would be a sports physio.
Thank you. I’m feeling very supported here already as you have All told me useful things and nobody said - don’t be daft! I think this week will have to be preparation week, getting everything ready to start next Monday! 🙂
