Calf problem advice please!

I completed W4R3 today. After run 1 This week, had a pain in my calf but on the day of run 2 (Friday) it had gone. I completed run two and had no pain at all during the run. However a couple of hours afterwards the pain was back. Yesterday the pain was there but bearable so I went swimming for one hour, followed by a sauna. No pain during swimming nor today. As I was pain free I did run 3 and again no pain during the run but it reappeared about an hour and a half after the run. Has anyone experienced anything similar? What did you do? Ibuprofen gel gives temporary relief. Thank you in advance for any advice.

it might just be your body readjusting to the new regime. Do you stretch thoroughly after your run?

Hopefully by stretching and your body strengthening will sort it out but if it continues a trip to the docs may be in order

runner56 may well be right, and certainly the after-run stretches are critically important. BUT (as someone who is just atarting to run again 7 months after a severe calf muscle injury) if the pain persists then ease off for a while and find a sports physiotherapist.

Thank you. Yes, I prowl quite often, not posting as much recently. Have been on the IC for 7 months with my severe (grade 3, on margins of surgery but thankfully avoided that!) calf muscle injury. I've kept in touch with my local running club throughout and gone to their social gatherings etc. As I've been unable to run I have also been marshalling at my local Parkrun on Saturdays, now having earned my T-shirt as a 25-times Parkrun volunteer: I'm addicted to Parkrun, I love it! Literally just started getting back into things with walks of varying lengths/pace - the running club did a Valentine Challenge where we picked ourselves a Valentine-related target for February, so as part of my recovery process I settled for walking 14K and then added a solo Parkrun course circuit as my "graduation".

Nice to hear from you David, sorry to hear about the injury.

The Active 10 forum might be perfect for you as you make a come back!

Warming up well and stretching after, is of course really essential...but, take note of this recurring twinge...

We can do everything correctly and still have issues... ( I had a calf tear which kept me on the IC, for a while... and I am overly cautious as many of the friends on the forum know:)

These were a copule of my posts at the time...

My calf tear injury started with a twinge, which disappeared... then recurred.. I stopped running and did the exercises etc.. went out again and it was back... I am not saying this to alarm you, but just to make you aware:)

Using a painkilling gel or pain killers is not a plan really and if possible, get it checked by a Sports Physio...they really can be very helpful:)

Hi,

I used to get a really sharp pain in my calf when I ran. Started doing the brilliant Runners World recovery yoga session and it went after a couple of weeks. You can find the session online, just google it.

Hope it gets better soon. 🏃🏻‍♀️

Thank you all. I will definitely up the stretches and see a sport Physio. It just surprises me that there is no pain when running. Just after. It should be W5R1 tomorrow. I will re-assess nearer the time
