I’m starting couch to 5k for the third time today. First time I fell and pulled a ligament in my knee. Second time I got bronchitis. Now with two diagnosis of oesteoarthritis and oesteoporosis I am determined to strengthen my bones and my muscles running. Wish me luck.

Well done on perseverance.

Your conditions do mean that you need to take it easy. Extra rest days may be necessary. With an increased risk of bone fracture, do make sure that you are wearing good running shoes, preferably fitted after a gait analysis and probably well cushioned. You need to minimise the impact, so running on grass is a good option.

Running will help slow the decline in bone mass, which happens to all of us after the age of 30 (ish), although it cannot restore the bones to the way they were when you were younger. It will however increase the strength of supportive muscles, balance and coordination, which can go a long way to reducing the risk of falling, which is one of the commonest causes of fractures.

Take it easy and have fun.

I have also just started again. I tried a few times, years ago, but I was also stopped with recurrent bronchitis and the like. Week 1 day 1 done - and I think I nearly died!

Successfully completed week 1, day 1. Once I overcame my fear of falling again it was reasonably easy despite a two month enforced break. I had got to end of week 6 before I fell so hoping to build up again quite quickly one run at a time.
