Frustration!

Afternoon.

I went on holiday last week and took my running gear and actually did a run whilst away (on 20th August), which I was really pleased about. However, as the day went on my hip started hurting. So, despite being off to a great start and feeling determined to carry on C25K whilst on holiday, I decided that it would be stupid to carry on running whilst away and in pain and so I just took it easy.

I asked Google what the problem may be with my hip and I concluded it was probably Bursitis. With that looking the most likely cause of the hip pain, I tried to do some stretching (which hurt so I stopped) and took pain killers when I felt I really needed them. I hate taking pain killers unless I really feel its necessary and so only did that a couple of times.

As the week went on the pain became less constant but I really felt it when I'd been sitting for a while, or when I got out of bed in the morning.

By the end of my week away I could feel a niggling pain with my hip but it was definitely easing. By Sunday (27th) there seemed to be an improvement and I was now home so I went for my first run since the pain started. The hip pain returned once I started running (but not whilst I was doing the warm up walk) but then eased off shortly afterwards. I went for another run this morning and again, the pain started as I started running but eased off again relatively quickly. However, as the day has gone on today the pain has returned and is constant.

I'm on week 8 and this is such an achievement for me. I typically hate exercise and this has been the only thing I've found which I really enjoy, despite finding it hard work. It's so unlike me to sustain an activity like this. I normally take the path of least resistance. If I stop now I just know I'll struggle to get back in to it. I'm finding the whole thing frustrating, especially as I'm so close to the end/graduation.

Obviously, I can't carry on with C25K to prove a point to myself but consequently cause myself a long term injury. That's just stupid.

Does anyone have any advice with regards to Bursitis? Is it a case of waiting it out?

One theory I read was that the hip pain may have been caused by the running surface I was on whilst on holiday. At home I run on the pathways around the housing development I live on and have had no prior problems. On holiday I was on a running track and completing the C25K session took 16 laps which just went round and round.

Sorry for the moan.... really fed up :(

Hi, that's a shame having come so far, I'm sure someone on here can advise you, I hope it can be sorted. 😁

Crap, crap, crappety crap, I thought you'd probably just been on hols and not checking in until you were back home... you poor thing. As far as I know it's the usual rest and ice and treatment, with gentle reintroduction of exercise and I have heard that hill running is bad news, but you were on a track, so maybe that's just quackery.

I think you are on a wait and see mode, physio may help of course, but the appointments in the NHS are like hen's teeth, I know I waited 3 months for my appointment a year back. And you don't want to be waiting that long, I am guessing from how upset you sound. Don't know what your GP is like but mine is fab and will often do phone consultations and she told me when I had my health issue how long she thought it would take to get me a physio appointment. That way at least you have some 'insider info' on which to make your decision on what to do.

I think mrrun had something similar and he paid to go to physio earlier, because it was affecting him so much.

Really sorry for your news, I thought we'd be popping the corks for your podium place this week.

Hope the pain lessens

X

Not related to running but when I injured my back a few years ago snowboarding I found a great chiropractor who helped me back to fitness. I still go now for any flare ups and general maintenance. Some people don't agree I'm sure but when it comes to hips/joints/backs/fitness/stretches stuff like that I find him so helpful, there seems like nothing he can't find the route off. Not the cheapest but worth it!

Most of us here are not medically qualified and would hesitate to offer a diagnosis. See your GP or a physio.

Pain can be a real 'pain' but you need to find out where and why. My GP wasn't showing signs of great enthusiasm when l asked for a physio (knee) so l paid for it myself and I'm glad l did. The referral was finally put through and they booked me in after a seven month wait :( but by that time l was fine and running.

Please listen to your body and if anything badly new, suspicious or awkward see your doctor and ask for help, ideally a physio.

All the best & let us know!
