Prep for Breast Op!! and Advice For Post Op?

I am so proud of myself today. I have managed to complete my second run of week 5. I was a bit scared to tackle it at first but I was determined to run this morning because I knew that I was going to have the results of a breast cell biopsy.

The results weren't terrible but I will need to have a lumpectomy in 2 weeks' time. The irony is that I feel so good at the moment. Having felt quite depressed, overweight and unfit recently, this running program is really helping me to turn my life around. I think that I am quite worried that my new found surge of energy will evaporate.

I suppose that I do have a couple of weeks before I have the operation and I am lucky enough to have two very active canine assistants.

please has anyone got any tips on how I can tackle things?

Can't particularly think why you can't carry on until the surgery. After that the surgeon/breast care nurse are likely to have the best guidance but my hunch is that it will involve a bit of a break and a very robust sports bra when you first get back to it.

You are in so much better a place to recover quickly from the surgery through all your efforts so far... and we'll cheer you on all the way, through the frustrations of not running to supporting you back when the time is right.

Thank you so much for your support. This situation is completely out of the blue. I guess that I am a bit shell-shocked!

I am glad the results weren't terrible and good luck with the operation. It sounds like the programme is beneficial to you in lots of ways so keep going. No reason to stop before the op. Obviously you will take a break and I guess how long depends on the op and any other treatment you need. But you found the energy to start this so however long you need you can find it again. I have seen a few posts on here from people who had quite long breaks due to injury but still managed to finish in the end. No reason you can't do the same.

Meanwhile you will get lots of sympathy and support for your non running state as well as support to start again. Keep us posted and hope all goes well.

Check out with your surgeon for post surgery advice. Usually they are quite strict about your movements. Especially stretching and I recall that what I thought was stretching was totally different to the doctor. Different surgery but same area of the body. Please keep watching here as we are all with you on this. When you are able to return and run, we will cheer and support you on your comeback. Best wishes and we will be thinking of you

Stay positive. You will come out the other side and we are all here to cheer you on when you get back. Following surgeon's/ consultant's advice is best.

Good luck, keep us posted.

As you are feeling mentally and physically stronger since starting the running plan, this will no doubt help your recovery. You will probably have completed W5 so have that great satisfaction that completing that run brings... (yes, you can do it😊) Keep running until your op and hope its not too long before you can carry on to graduate.

Good luck and keep posting.xxx

I've just popped in to wish you all the luck in the world. You sound as though you are in a really good frame of mind for your op and recovery. Just make sure that you follow the advice from the medics and treat your body kindly post op.

When you are ready to start again, or perhaps even before, pop back in for an inspiring read and a reminder of all the fun you are missing. You'll soon be itching to get the running shoes on.

Might you be able to cycle or something to keep the energy levels up? After a few weeks, I mean.

Anyway, big hugs from a total stranger - just what you need! At least they are only virtual hugs.

Of course it is a scary shock, but you seem in a good, positive place. Running will help you right up until the surgery and then the medical team will advise how long post op (usually 6 weeks). In the mean time you can be walking and we will all be rooting for you. :)

Hi justjulie57 , I'm not sure why I didn't see your post before now. I had a similar experience, last year starting running after a mastectomy and then a lumpectomy on the other breast.

In our area we are given access to a Mcmillan personal trainer at the gym. Mine has been fabulous, and I am still able to get a session with her if I want. She knew all about the cancer and what exercises were suitable at different stages, and has been so supportive.

I was just wondering how everything had gone for you. I hope you are now back to health. x
