My first post on any social media

Maybe I am old fashioned, not doing social media, but at almost 75 perhaps I have an excuse...

My main reason for writing this is that I felt I might encourage others to start, or continue with couch to 5 k by my experience.

Up to a few weeks ago I was not doing any exercise, also unusually for a man, I have never been interested in sport. Although I have tried gyms in the past, they completely bore me so I know that even if I try again, It will not last.

Which brings me to couch to 5k. I made a decision that I could do it. I don't mean that I thought I could (considering running 30 minutes seemed impossible) I mean that I decided I was going to do it. I found that the advisor at wellbeing had no one as old as me so I knew it would be a challenge for me.

When I did my first 60 second run I realised that a minute is much longer than I thought! Now I am due to run the last one of week 7, which means that I have now run several runs of 25 minutes without stopping. I try to follow the idea that I will not say "I can't" but I prefer to say "I can." If I do that and I'm not able to complete whatever it is at least I can say that I tried. To summarise a quotation from Henry Ford in my own words: some people say they can and some people say they can't, they are probably both right.

I do not mean anything I have said to indicate that if I can do it then anyone can. Everyone is different and has different health situations. I just hope that my comments will help and encourage someone else.

What a super post.... :) I wish you had posted before :) This type of post is what makes this forum so terrific:)

This forum is not a bit like other Social media.. it is just a supportive forum following C25K and all the runners.. on that journey!

We encourage each other and motivate each other, empathise, sympathise and even give small shove if necessary :)

Please. maybe post the rest of your runs... there are many of us more, seasoned runners on here and many more joining each day...:) They need all the support that is going.

Very well done you! I am a mere youngster at 67 :) I also love my quotations... one of my favourites which seems apt...

"If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.

"

Edison knew what he was talking about.

Onward and upward to your next run :)

First of all well done if this is your first Social Media post, it great to offer and to receive encouragement and support. Already you have made me feel quite young at 64. An even bigger well done for your running. Good on you 👏

I wish there were a "Love" and not just a "Like" button. What a fabulous post - I wish it could be pinned to the top of the board to make sure that everyone reads it. You are such a star1

Mind you, watch out for that social media or you can kiss the rest of your life goodbye.

Lovely post none of us are too old to learn lessons, please share some more if you feel you'd like to. Young or old we love them all, because it gives a shared sense of running.

I agree that this post deserves a massive LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

I cannot tell you how brilliant this post is on every level & what a great place to gave your social media debut!

I can't wait to read of your graduation😀

Yes Henry Ford was right, keep with the "I can" mindset it's just great. I was reminded of the words of another great writer "as a man thinketh so he is"!

You have been hiding your talents too long.

I do have a theory that many younger people have a fear about FAILING this programme, because of the way they have been continually tested and assessed in their schooling and work lives, being told that there may be serious consequences if they fail to hit the mark first time. Your attitude is the sort of positivity we applaud and I hope this post is read by many doubters of their own abilities.

Welcome aboard and I do hope you will become a convert to posting online and a regular on this forum.

I knew you would appreciate this post... we need so many more with the positivity and the I can, attitude. The fear of failing seems so prevalent at the moment... just to know that, yes...it is possible, just believe :)

You are inspiring! Not only do you decide to run C25K and succeed, but you also are not afraid to learn new technology skills. You have my admiration!

Fantastic post and well done on your success so far. That extra 5 minutes added to your run will be no problem to you.

In regards to social media, I'm with you. I'm 43 and this Forum is as far as my Social Media goes. I have no interest in taking pictures of my dinner and sharing it with others on Facebook, or looking at pictures of other peoples dinners either. I put instagram, twitter, and all others into the same box. This Forum on the other hand is an amazing resource. Keep posting.
