Water bottles

Hi everyone. Can I ask peoples opinions on water bottles. My running is getting so much better. My problem is that as I am running further and faster I am needing to drink during the run. So what water bottle do people recommended. Ive tried various and my problem is the sloshing around of the water really puts me off balance. Well sometimes even my bracelet moving around puts me off so you can imagine how I feel holding a water bottle. Once it annoyed me so much and threw me so off balance I chucked it away after having had a few mouthfuls. Any sensible ideas as to how to either overcome the sloshing or is their a miracle bottle out there that doesnt slosh.

Well done with the running!

Do you pass any shops you could pop into for a drink? You could take a credit card with you to avoid rattling change :)

Or, base a circular run around your home or car, leave water there which you can quickly grab for a drink, then go off for another circuit (and so on).

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about sloshing, although you could mask the sound with earphones and music...

I know I'm clutching at straws really. Mind you if I could invent a non sloshy bottle I'm sure I could make a fortune ... :)

I would buy one :D

You can certainly get ones that squish down as you drink so there's no sloshing, I can't remember what they're called now, I knew someone that used to have one! I think they were quite expensive. They were a bit like a clear plastic hot water bottle or drip bottle!

Oh I know what you mean I think. I never thought of those. I reckon you've hit the nail on the head. Surely a squishy bottle wouldn't splosh.

Yes, I'll try & find out. Indeed! And a sploshy bottle wouldn't squish!

I'll be interested to hear how you get on, I can't stand having to carry anything, and hate being 'unbalanced', I've got a two bottle zikee belt, which I love.

And yes the sloshing is a but odd, but you do get used to it, I generally run with the bottles on my back, so the sound isn't too loud, it also seems to lessen as I go along, but I do usually run with one headphone in, so I have probably learned to ignore the sloshing!

How you carry one of those would be interesting to me, I've seen them in Decathlon, they've got a clip - I wouldn't like that bouncing off my belt.....

Anyway, let us know how it goes for you....

I have seen squishy bottles in Trespass - you might have a point about the non sloshing with those! They were not very expensive - under £10.

Can't really help with sloshing but this is the belt I use for long runs. It has two small bottles but depending on your distance you may only need one. 🙂

Oh thats not a bad idea either Sandra. At this rate Ill be ebays customer of the month. But I definitely wont be dehydrated. Out with the sloshy once and for all.

Yep that's the belt I've got, really like it...the pocket is big enough for a smartphone, snacks, keys etc.,

If your runs are much over a couple of hours, perhaps invest in a camelback or similar system? If in the 1 to 2 hour range, a belt mounted bottle. Under an hour you probably dont need water.

Im running (I use the word run loosely) 10k at the moment and it takes me around 1 hour 15 mins. I am desperately trying to knock even just a few mins off before my next 10k race. If I dont drink though my throat gets really sticky and I have to keep trying to make saliva but being a lady I dont like spitting so all in all I probably look like I am pulling all sorts of weird and wonderful faces so I thought maybe carrying water around with me would help preserve my street credibility (you never know who you are going to bump into when out running - mind you at my age I doubt Im a very pretty sight to whoever I bump into)

Are you drinking enough in the 24 hrs before you run?

I'm a two bottle girl on the back as well for my longer runs. I find that one bottle sloshes more than two little ones and I quietly like the fact it makes me feel like I'm in a western movie and I can quick draw my water bottles. 😀. I have a bladder backpack as well but I find the maintenance on that to keep it clean is very high.

Sometimes I really should read things properly. I was reading reviews on amazon about the squishy bottle and someone said something about a bladder pack. I didnt realise it was a real thing and thought it was some sort of ladylike code for needing to go for a wee halfway through a run and using some contraption like a catheta. Doh. I learn something new everyday.

Hehe, that made me laugh. This is the one I got from Amazon I use the backpack more than the bladder but it has been really good and reasonable

reading through this post because it's a current thought for me too, I thought you'd struck on something there with the bladder but the maintenance is a good point - I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it; my son used to use one for hiking and then leave it unwashed when he got home 🤢 Maybe it'll come to that but definitely good to be reminded of, for final decision making.

I have a salomon vest that holds 2 soft bottles... I prevent sloshing by sucking the air out... its also incredibly comfy... or hide a stash on your route to grab as you go past?

Titch121 profile image
Titch121 in reply to ju-ju-

Ive just looked that up. It does look comfy although I think it also looks far too professional for me. As much as I love my new found hobby of running and have run the London vitality 10k and am doing the race for life 10k in September I dont think im quite up to your standards.

dont be daft, Im not a professional!! I can recommend it though, and good luck with your races :)

I don't usually take a drink as I hate the thing! If I have to, I drink it early then stash the empty bottle down my front. No sloshing 🙂

I had to find water once but I think we are hard wired to do so. I found a tap in a cemetery 😁💪🏃‍♀️✔️👍

I have the same belt as Sandraj39 ...just take one belt on anything up to a 5K... the small bottle is great and no sloshing really :)

I have a similar belt to Sandra and a back pack but only use for long runs and/or very hot weather. However, this summer, on runs of a 60-90 mins I have taken to chewing a couple of pieces of peppermint gum which helps with the sticky/dry mouth (and spent gum is put in a bin or tissue and taken home).

Titch121 profile image
Titch121

Thank you so much for all your replies. I think I shall try them in order from cheapest to hightest and see which suits me best.

So Ill start with the gum, if that doesnt work Ill go onto the collapsable bottle which I do like the idea of but not sure how easy it would be to hold when Im running, then if that doesnt work I think Ill try the belt with the bottle in it, then if that doesnt work the back pack bladder thing. Then if none of them work my last resort will be to tag along with someone who is happy carrying my water for me.

Thanks again everyone

There is a bum bag on eBay that holds a bottle? Really thinking about this as I just can't seem to be able to hold anything and run!

Ive just found something that hopefully will solve my problem. Its a bottle that fits into a flip belt. So ive ordered a flipbelt equivalent from ebay (half the price) and then when it comes Im going to give this a go.
