So close and then...

Graduation run should be tonight or tomorrow. Well it won't be tonight. Woke up this morning with pain in my leg. Right at the top. Not sure if it's the hip joint or muscle. It's not happy that I have been sat still all day.

Not sure what caused it. Not run since Saturday so don't think it's that. Hopefully if I stretch tonight it will be better tomorrow. Otherwise graduation will be on Saturday.

I knew it was all going too well.

  • Such a shame you've had to delay good luck with your final run whenever it happens.

  • Be easy on yourself, rest and walk or swim. You will graduate very soon I'm sure😁

  • I'm an advocate of stretching exercises. But on this occasion, I wouldn't recommend it. If the pain is a strain injury, stretching it while it's already painful is likely to tear it more.

Standing straight up, can you raise your knee to waist height, not straight legged, just as though you're about to step on something. Can you do that without pain?

Next would be, can you raise the knee exactly the same as described, but this time, once raised, can you then rotate the upper leg out to the side, such that you're opening up the pelvis. Sort of as though you're striding over something to the side. Can you do that without pain?

If you can't do either, then I'd suspect you've pulled your quad. If you can do the former but not the latter, I'd better on a hip problem. Not necessarily the joint itself, more likely a hip flexor muscle strain.

If you can do both of these without too much pain, I'd suggest a few sets of the second exercise, done swiftly but not fast, just to warm the joint and get some blood circulating in the area. But I wouldn't actually stretch it until it's completely pain free.

Sort of like using your knee to draw a circle in the air.

  • Thanks. That's helpful. The first is fine. The second OK but not so comfortable so I think that's where the problem lies.

  • Is it a case if tight hips or ITB issue?

  • Oh noooooo, that's rough. Rest up mate. Hope it's sorted soon and you get that graduation badge you really deserve.

  • I'm just giving you a chance to catch up.

  • 😁😁😁

  • Oh no! Did you sleep on it funny?

  • Absolutely no idea so I guess that's the most likely explanation.

  • I will be graduation run on Saturday too! Have to do one tomorrow.

  • Hey how's the injury?

  • Better than yesterday. Cautiously optimistic I will be running again by the weekend but we'll see. Where are you up to now?

  • Glad to hear it's feeling better hope you get your final run over the weekend, week 8 for me nearly there hoping for graduation next weekend.

  • Great. Hope you do better with your final week than me. You may yet get there before me.
