From Hate to Great? Day 1 ... dreading it

I really can't stand running. So I haven't. But I know it's the most available sport we have and I need to get fitter, lose weight and for my own sanity make a change.

I have new Bluetooth ear phones to use when I go out... surely that's a change already?

It will be great! (as Donald Trump might say) :)

Take the first step, it will be hard and then you will be filled with a sense of achievement.

Go REALLY slow and you will make it :)

Try it! I never thought I would stick at it and here I am, 5 years on, someone who needs running for my sanity and frets if something stops me going for a run. I will never be fast, I will never go very far, I will never look like a slim and elegant, pony-tailed, colour-coordinated, cool, comfortable lean, running machine - but I don't care :)

Follow the programme, take it slowly and take pride in your achievements from week to week. Keep posting on here for all the support and for the new friends it will bring you. I have met up with people I met on here from all round the UK and now always pack my kit to run while abroad - running tourism is the best! Good luck!

So much this! Well, I try to be colour-coordinated if possible. And like to imagine I look comfortable for a minute or two ;) But yes. Absolutely! :D

I wouldn't even run for the bus five years ago, but now it's a constant in my life - it's my escape and relaxation, as well as my exercise and attempt towards healthier living. Even though I don't manage to run nearly as often as I'd like, the thought and intention is always there. :)

Leave aside your preconceptions, leave aside the things you don't like about running. I had jolly good reasons for not running, but also had a perception that runners were self-obsessed and many other negative things (and I still think that is true of plenty).

But somehow the NHS version of C25K wasn't like that. No 'poncy' stretching, no running every day and life having to revolve around it. Just a very well designed programme with modest aims. The woman voicing the podcasts didn't use all that gung-ho language I so dislike (and I later discovered that she was posting here) You don't have to think about whether you like it or dislike it, you just stick *one* earphone in and pretty much just do as you are told (which is obviously quite a revelation for many of us!) You don't think about pace or distance.

You learn to just 'be with' the experience - few of us find every or even many runs pure unalloyed joy from start to finish. We learn to ride the roller coaster of emotions and realise that they don't usually mean anything at all.

Embracing change is all! Now you have that sorted you can make other changes. It sort of snowballs from here on in if you stick with it.

C25k is a gentle intro to running. It's fun! 😃

Well done you for starting. I started a week ago, and I have never really run ever but I can start to feel the bug! I am slow and I repeated Week 1 Day 1 for 3 or 4 days as I struggled with the breathing (I have mild asthma) but today went onto Week 1 Day 2. I did feel a bit bad about repeating the Day 1 for a week but have convinced myself that I will do this no matter how long it takes so my long term goal is within 6 months I will do 5K. If I have to repeat a day so be it!! Good luck xx

I thought I hated running. What I realised after doing the programme for a little while was that I hated the thought of running. I also hated doing something that I wasn't very good at.

What c25k made me realise was that I could achieve the goals that were being set (if I kept things slow and steady), which I actually liked very much. I also realised that I love being outside (tick), I love having some time and space for myself (tick) and I began to love the results that running were giving (feeling healthier, getting fitter, changing shape) (tick).

I really hope you find you love something about running too x

Just get out there and enjoy. This is a great journey, and the company on that journey is amazing :)

There will be successes and set backs, but that is all part of it... and most of us will have experienced what you do... so keep posting!
