The Return....

Ah, back in the fray, catchmeifucan returns! Yes, a few months off due to a torn meniscus, but started back last night with run 1 of week 1, looking forward to all the painful pleasure again! I've missed you all (although taken a naughty peep now and again) and hope to add to the conversation at least once in a while. Looking forward to it, Ian.

Thanks Poppy, yes, happened on a run on holiday in Cyprus late last summer. Kept thinking it would get better but after 3-4 months realised it was a bit more serious. Had it checked out and the MRI scan showed a tear in the meniscus in my right knee. Because it had been so long we decided not to intervene and let it carry on healing and was recommended to just start back gently, and c25k is the ideal way of course. Good to be back and looking forward to an uneventful recovery.

Good luck with the recovery, it must be a little nerve-wracking putting your knee to the test.

Thanks, it is, hopefully it's had long enough to mostly mend and if I'm careful.....

I've had to refrain from pounding the roads with meniscus troubles to Ian, all the best for your return. Won't be long before you graduate again (do you get a double-graduate badge??)

Hi Ziggy, thanks for that, I'll just be glad to be able to say 'I run', again!

Thanks MissW, I appreciate it. Yes, slow but sure, happy to repeat weeks and so on if I need to for the knee's sake, just so long as I can get back to running regularly again!

Does cycling help it?

Well I'm not sure it helps it BUT I don't think it hinders it. At least I've been able to get out on the bike and whether sticking to the flat roads or uphill, challenging trails, it generally hasn't caused it a problem. What physically stopped me running was that after coming back from hurting it in Cyprus was that every time I tried to run I would have this excruciating pain beneath and on the inside of the right knee each time my foot struck the floor, so it was that pounding through the knee, so I just couldn't! Turns out the tear is in the inside rear meniscus so it follows that that's where I'd feel it! Luckily it hasn't caused my knee to lock up as this would have meant some intervention with an operation, and so I was advised to continue to let it heal and the specialist was happy to let me just ease back into running, so here I am!

Hi ancientrunner, thank you, I will; run 2 of week 1 tonight!

That sounds really painful. I suppose cycling strengthens our knees and without the slamming that running brings. Softer trails sound appealing 😀

I find that cycling makes my knees ache but I don't do it that often 🙂

Sorry to hear you injured yourself, but good to see you coming back. I had to have a few weeks off (3rd December to mid Jan) with a painful condition and I'm running again now, but I've lost a lot of fitness!
