but I really couldn't keep going at Parkrun this morning. Heavy rain, heavier legs, it was just torture so I stopped halfway round and walked home. Feeling awful about it now but I literally could not see my way to carry on. When will they bring out windscreen wipers for specs?! Still, half a Parkrun is better than none plus I had the walk home afterwards. Planning to go back tomorrow with a friend who couldn't come today and we'll run the course together. Hope I pass the gremlins who got the better of me today. There will still hopefully be muddy puddles I can drown them in.

You are definitely NOT a failure ! No way !

I would say to you WELL DONE for getting out there in the first place , the weather is bad today.

Have you tried wearing a baseball cap in the rain ? Works a treat at keeping the rain off your specs ! :-) xxx

Baseball cap may be a good solution, I will try that out :)

Thanks for your encouraging words :)

It would have been my 16th, and hoped it would be my second running the full 5k.

I"m going tomorrow determined to run it all :)

You will do it, put any negative gremlins you come across in a box and tie down the boxπŸ€”

They're in the box. The lid is down. My new blue shoes are drying out ready for a successful trot tomorrow :) .

I think a cap is the answer. I have never worn one other than for running but for sun, rain, hail etc they are perfect.

Enjoyxx

:) :) :)

Definitely not ! Remember we don't use the "F" word. It was a practice run. You got out there. I always try to avoid rain and lucky that if it's not on all day I have luxury of waiting to avoid it.

Although it's not likely you can tell the parkrun to wait till rain moves on !!

At least you have a cunning plan to go out with your friend .

Only asking but do you need to wear specs all the time ?

I really only need mine for reading although I do have varifocals. I never wear them outdoors or even when cycling. I know friends who wear them all the time out of habit.

Perhaps you need to. If so as you could try baseball cap or get your friend to run beside you with umbrella. A good friend won't mind I'm sure being your "Flunky" for the day !!

I can't see a thing without them and can't wear contact lenses any more because of a cornea condition so it's either windscreen wipers or a baseball cap ;)

I did have a brolly with me for walking to the course but I left it at the bag drop, otherwise I could have scampered round in its shelter. Might have gathered a group round me trying to take advantage of that ;)

AncientMum profile image
AncientMumGraduateβ€’ in reply toSlowWorm2016

I'm the same, can't see anything without my specs and can't wear lenses. Have been known to risk it and run without if I get caught in the rain mid-run but basically it's a hat or a postponed run.

Edit: Definitely not a failure!

SlowWorm2016 profile image
SlowWorm2016Graduateβ€’ in reply toAncientMum

I took the specs off to dry them and felt very wobbly, so running bare eyed is a definite no-no. Will go shopping for a visor or thin hat at some point :)

Just a thought, have you tried wiping your glasses with Rain-X or whatever similar product they have over there?

I would try it overnight so any lingering fumes or whatever didn't affect your eyes, but it could be worth a try πŸ€”

I have an anti fog spray for my swimming goggles. I suppose I could try that. I had to Google Rain X, being a non driver I had never heard of it but it might work in a similar way to my goggle spray. Only one way to find out...it's still raining here ;)

Definitely not a f,,,,, I can't say that word - you went and you did run. It was horrible out there this morning, I was volunteering at my local parkrun, and it was very cold and wet and only 114 (edited from the 136 I counted through the funnel!) brave souls turned out. Great to hear you are going to do the course again tomorrow, and it's supposed to be much drier tomorrow. I wear glasses too, it was a nightmare today. When I run I usually use disposable contact lenses, great for running and driving, but no good if I need to read anything! Have you tried lenses? It might work for you, or a cap with a good sturdy peak!

SlowWorm2016 profile image
SlowWorm2016Graduateβ€’ in reply toScruffy64

Well done for volunteering. It was beyond miserable, wasn't it. I'm going to try the baseball cap, it's not worth trying lenses as they could cause major cornea problems which is just too painful :(

Scruffy64 profile image
Scruffy64Graduateβ€’ in reply toSlowWorm2016

Oh yes, it was miserable out there today - baseball cap sounds like the way to go, I might try it myself, a lot less faff than lenses!

Well done! I wimped out of my parkrun this morning, mind you had a really busy day yesterday and a late night, the weather was yuk here too. I'm planning on running tomorrow πŸ˜„

I use a baseball cap, never used one before I took up running, but for keeping the rain. (Most of it) off my specs, it's great, would definitely recommend, you can get thin material ones if, like me, you don't like your head to get too hot, or you can get a visor type, - like golfers wear - I prefer that for the summer when the sun is really bright, to give me a bit of shade if I'm not wearing sunnies or the glasses I've got with photochromic lenses.

I know this feeling, it happened on one of my runs last week. About 1min 30 in I was in agony and felt I needed to stop, the crawl that I proceeded to run at may have been a walk. Ended on a much shorter run both in terms of distance and time. After thinking about the run, I just became really proud of myself that I got out there and did ANYTHING.

That's it. Any run is better than no run :)

Meh, we are not robots SW. Good runs, practice runs, being chased by savage mutant mutts runs, those "Why am I doing this" runs, god-I-love,-this runs.

If it were the same run every time it would really be horrible!

Our bodies fail, but we adapt. You'll go out the front door again and run won't you? How does that make you a failure?

Just sing to yourself "Hi fiddly dee, a runners life for me" - it's all about continuance after all, not one individual run ;)

We all have those runs now and then, and there's often a reason for it. Did you start off to fast for instance? Had you eaten enough? Been overdoing things? Coming down with a virus or something? There are loads of reasons why a run doesn't go as planned, and sometimes no reason at all. I don't believe in Gremlins personally, listen to your body, sort out your specs problem and you'll smash it next time xxx

SlowWorm2016 profile image
SlowWorm2016Graduateβ€’ in reply toCurlygurly2

I never start off too fast, lol. It's all I can do to start up anyway ;)

Think I was starting off tired and definitely let the weather dictate my mood. But it's all in the past now, put down to experience and moved on from.

Will definitely be calling in to the shops in town for a hit of head-borne rain protection ;)
