Can we talk socks for a moment? Do any of you have favourite socks that you run in and what difference do you think they make. As my distances are increasing, this is becoming a bigger issue. Would love to get some recommendations and some pros/cons.

In winter I find wool running socks very important as the cold air comes in through the ventilation at the top of the shoe.

When it's not oppressively cold or hot I try and run in compression socks - I wear them occasionally during the day anyways on the doctor's advice.

Other than that, often just my regular socks. Inevitably one has a shot elastic and they keep sliding down.

Compression socks are certainly worth looking into, thanks

Always use proper running socks in running shoe's, which are double layering at toe & heel to prevent blisters. Just got some more mile London socks, pack of 5 pairs about £10 on eBay or Amazon, find them good.

Also have a pair of high end 1000 mile socks which are twinned skinned and padding at toe & heel, great quality very comfy but £12.99 a pair, the padding is supposed to give more cushioning against the banging of the foot strike. Then there's other high end socks Thorlo & Hilly, supposed to be very good but at a price..😊

Yes the twin skin socks look interesting. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Mooning

Although not greatly experienced (still on C25K..) I find Nike Drifit really good. A few years a go, in one of my previous attempts at running, I used to get blisters on the arches of my feet when running down hill in warmer weather. I think this was unique problem to me...but it completely stopped when I changed to the drifit socks. In my case they definitely reduced friction due to wicking moisture away. I also think they do offer extra comfort and cushioning in key areas of the foot over normal sport socks - I can tell the difference when my running socks are in the washing basket and I have to resort to an old pair of white sports socks. So for me, they are worth the extra cost - although process have come down in recent years.

Thanks for the recommendation. This is exactly where I get issues with my feet. I'll certainly look into this.

I get blisters between my toes on longer runs and find that injinji wool toe socks really help and stop me getting really horrible blistered feet!

I swear by Nike elite cushion running socks. Have never had a problem with my feet in 3 years.

My first socks were Aldi Compression socks (because they were there when I bought my first shoes and I knew nothing at all about running or clothing/equipment) and they are very comfortable so I bought another pair. I also bought a pair of More Miles compression socks which I liked at first but now I find the right one too tight at the toes. They are supposed to be size 5-8 I think but they are very small, 6 at the most.

But my More Miles ankle socks, 5 for about a tenner are really comfortable. I plan to buy more for everyday use

I am waiting for a reply about the sizing for some waterproof socks - they go from 3-5 and 6-8. I usually take 5's in shoes, 6's in hiking boots and my new runners are 5.5, so I have asked the retailer on ebay to measure the socks and tell me which to buy. Dexshell Ultralights are the ones I am looking at

If you like toasty soft comfort then Balega Enduro all the way. Great quality, work well in all weathers and stay new looking even after multiple wash cycles. Not cheap but you're worth it.
