A belated post too!

Well...since I am now, almost sure, that I may have over-bounced a little in the new trainers, I thought on Easter Sunday, just a short run, nice and easy in my old faithful running shoes. After my run on Friday, late afternoon, through the evening and Saturday found me with a weird pain, all around the bottom of my rib cage, front and back.. an ache, and tender if I touched. Uncomfortable when I breathed deeply, laughed or coughed! Last time anything felt vaguely like this, was after I broke my ribs whilst rock climbing!!!

Since I had not been climbing, (not yet this year anyway) or lifting heavy things, or over-stretching , lovely husband, ever so tactfully, suggested that maybe, just maybe, on Friday I had travelled a little too far, too fast., particularly after the run before that! Age was never mentioned! So, I had a good hot soak on Saturday evening and when I woke on Sunday, the rib pain had gone... ! ! So... off for a run..but ever so cautiously and very slowly.

Old running shoes on too...:)

I set out in glorious sunshine, the air fresh and cold...out and off up the hill, but took a good long warm up walk first, to ensure no twinges or anything unpleasant was happening! All seemed fine. I had taken Stamina with me... but just slow and steady was the pace. Up the hill and over the roundabout. Hardly any traffic, obviously folk had got away before the weekend. The two Canada geese honked loudly overhead..late risers, as they headed to the hidden pond. I had a plan to head over the grassed meadow areas that fringe the edge of the housing estate and see if there were any routes through for running; so, up the hill, with regular forays down through small copses of trees and into strange cul de sacs or crescents. I spent an awful lot of time, retracing my runs, answering the greetings of dog walkers and people I had never seen before. It is amazing what you find when you look... hidden ponds, little walkways, tracks and trails through the trees... wonderful!

It was bit nippy and I was sort of regretting my decision to leave off a layer, but, ribs felt fine. easy to breathe and a good steady rhythm. Quite a relief. Because of all the in and out adventures, I had to make my way back to the hill, to head back home. Family coming for Sunday Lunch, so a few last minute chores to be done. I turned and headed down the hill after crossing to the golf course. The glint of the early sun on the irons of the early morning players, jumpered and capped against the chill, and enjoying the luxury of the almost empty fairways.

My speed had increased slightly, but I did not feel any ill effects. A slowdown walk back home and a relieved smile from husband. All good...except... during the day and into the evening, I had a weird pain in my knee!!!!! Accompanied by an ache and a giving way..hmmm. Daughter, at lunchtime, suggested putting knee support on... hmmm ... really , really bad only when going upstairs...clearly something not right.

No swelling, but very tender to the touch..no run on Monday, I needed to see how this would develop or not.

An interesting run, a lovely Easter Sunday Lunch, but felt less Tigger-ish and much more Eeyore-ish by Sunday evening! :(

A weird day, with weird things happening...maybe I am getting o****! Eeek!

Oh dear, Floss, this doesn't sound good. Sounds like your problems can be traced back to your new shoes. I'm going to make 2 suggestions.

Firstly don't run at all for a week -agony I know, but better to have a short voluntary total rest than an enforced rest for a long time. During this time do the quad strengthening exercises Lovely James my physio gave me for my knee troubles. They really really do work (link below)

Secondly, when you do go out again, run in your old faithful shoes. If you remain pain-free then you know the problem isn't running per se. If you do have pain, then you'll need to work out what's causing it. If you remain pain free in your old shoes, then retry the tigger boots. If no pain in the tigger boots, then your current problem is probably just too many km too soon and you just need to cut back on your distances for a little while until your muscles and joints catch up with your desire to run. If you do have pain in the new shoes then it sounds like they're the culprits (oh no!!)

Hope this isn't too depressing a plan for you, Floss but, as an ex-research scientist, I do like to approach problems as logically as is possible, to try identify the root cause. More importantly, as a runner, I had 2 months on the IC with knee issues that spiralled because I didn't have the experience to know the damage I was doing by continuing to run without finding the cause of my knee pains.

Take good care, Sweetie xx

Thank you so much for this... I wish I had not posted two runs on the same day... I ran today... and in retrospect.. shouldn't have.... know that now.I think, as unwilling as I am... I have to have a rest!!! Thanks for the link.. will follow that up! :)

Oh Floss, bad luck but you know rest will probably sort it for now. I do AncientMum

Oops cut myself off. Duh. Wanted to say I have started doing AncientMum's quad strengthening exercises but just 1 x 6 reps a day when I remember. I think she was doing 3 x 10 over the day to really work the quads. After my knee pain when I started back running, I still could not do these exercises. I waited till I could go up and down the stairs free of pain. Hope it sorts itself out soon. Weird about the ribcage. What could that have been?

Not sure.. but since now, cannot  go up stairs without real pain... have got to sort it! :)

You're not weird and you're not old, Oldfloss! Hope your problems start to resolve themselves and it's just down to new shoes! I have achey knees myself today, but I got carried away with cycling yesterday (the weather here was fantastic) and definitely overdid it for the first ride in about 5 years!

I think I am.... not liking the thought... but having run today... am suffering now!

Glad your weather is so good too! :)

Oh no Floss - never old!

Sorry to hear this - rib pain sounds strange but knee pain could definitely be linked either to new shoes - always a good idea to alternate new/old pairs until new ones are broken in- or to overdoing it.

I prescribe a bit of rest. - you need to let that knee settle down as you don't want to put yourself on the injury couch for a long period.

Just have to be a bit patient and hope things come right quickly. Take care x

You are right.. should not have run today... ignore today's post!

The Tigger shoes will need careful breaking in :)

I think AncientMum   suns it up pretty well , as for old and weird, arent we all just a bit :)

Rest sounds the best advise, as hard as that maybe , discretion is the better part of valour and all that :)

Hopefully it is a temp glitch in the matrix and all will be well soon :)

Totally right...know that now!!!! Enforced rest after today's run now... :(

I was going to say that I thought that the rib pain was caused by too much jiggling of your middle as you ran downhill too quickly, possibly.  That's what always causes me to get rib ache.

You'll be fine I'm sure.

OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply tomisswobble

I hope that was the rib bit too! You could be right!!!

But.. the knee... not good after today's run....:( Should have posted earlier and taken advice...:(

Floss! What have I told you before about age!😊  but I bet that knee pain will go away eventually with RICE, so give it a rest! Have you enough support with those new shoes? Hope it clears up soon☺

Oldfloss profile image

Yep... sorry...I forgot!!! But I am going to have to rest up... probably due to new shoes..nothing else:)

I've had rib pain sometimes, just thought it was all the deep breathing I had been doing!  I would say rest the knee for a bit but have seen you have already done another run...😀

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate

Well not sure about the rib pain..but the knee thing.. well, let's just say I was a bit foolish to do the other run... but lessons learnt! Watch this space :)

Floss, As your a fan of rock climbing, can I ask what the big attraction is! I'm not trying to knock it, but have seen it on film & tv with Sly & Tom Cruise (Cliffhanger & Mission impossible) so it must be the safety aspect that puts me off. You must use safety lines when climbing? and do you climb with a specialist climbing club?

I would think you would have some better cliff faces to scale up where you are, making it more of an attraction, can't think of any down where I am☺

It's just good fun... Don't do as much as in our youth..more scrambles and bouldering now...But..in our time..( Goodness I sound ancient..) Llanberis Pass., North Wales, every weekend.. plus we have, The Roaches on our doorstep... Stanage Edge, Curbar, Windgather.. all excellent areas for climbing.

Yes.. ropes and my husband.. we climbed alone and still do..plus son in law who keeps us in check!

It was and is the, just you or you and your lead climber doing it. Being in control.. a bit like running really. The feel of the rock under your fingers and feet.. sun-warmed sometimes and ice cold at others...the exhilaration of an exposed route and the easy glow of a well known , gentle one... Gosh I feel nostalgic!!!

Rotten now, as I am about to hit the IC and cannot even walk upstairs!!!!

Oh Floss , I do hope youre okay .

You can make yourself comfy on the IC and I will bring you a nice cuppa tea and some biccies to dip in :-)

Have a nice rest and see how you go on.

Beautiful post as always. I saw Canadian Geese and a heron the other day. They took my breath away as I had never seen them so close up before xxxx

Well...like a  complete idiot... I ran Tuesday..  I got all behind with my posts and then, when I got the replies to the Sunday one,  realised I shouldn't have run on Tuesday!!!!..! No fool like this old fool.

Am now completely crocked knee wise...feeling so fed up and a bit sorry for myself at the moment. May post tomorrow but have realised I need to rest up.

You run sounds lovely....Geese and a heron...wow..So glad you are better and your snazzy new slimline self :)

Aw Floss ! :-) xxx

Its all a learning curve isnt it ? Its sometimes hard to tell at the time whether we should run with a niggle , hoping that it is just a niggle or making something worse !

Hindsight is a wonderful thing :-)

Have a good rest for a few days, frustrating I know , but definitely the right thing .

Hope youre feeling better soon xxx
