Great Scottish run anyone?

I think I must be barking mad... But I just signed up to do the great Scottish run 10k in 2 weeks time. I'm regularly running 5 or 6k but have struggled to get further, think I'm starting out too fast, so this will be good motivation. Anyone else taking part?

I think that you'll find out that, on the day, the atmosphere with all the other runners around will get you to the finish. If you run out of puff after 6K stop and walk for a few minutes to get your breath back. You'l be fine, I'm sure. Don't worry about it and just enjoy the day.

Sounds like fun. My mantra for the first part of all races is "pass no-one". I repeat that again and again until things open up a bit and I can run at my own pace. Also if you're going too fast you can use someone that you figure is a little slower than you to pace you - it's much easier when you have someone else's beat to follow.

Good luck!

One of my work mates is. I decided I wouldn't be ready for it but on reflection I think I might be. One for next year for me.

Good luck & enjoy the day I'm sure you'll get round just fine ☺x

Next year possibly as we have already committed to other runs that weekend in NI.

My baby brother, his wife and my eldest daughter are all doing it though - daughter already has her t-shirt and has been modeeling it for all to see! :) Good luck with your run, the atmosphere is supposed to be brilliant! :)

I would strongly recommend doing at least one interval training and some sort of strength training this week and next, as this helps build strength which enables you to go longer. You don't need to get to 10k on your training but getting as close as you can still help motivate you by giving you confidence. (when I hit 19k while training for my half, I got the wall, but I also thought "bloomin eck, this is achievable!")

I would also echo what runswithdogs said about pacing using others. At about 9 miles, I started seeing the same people: I'd go past them when they walked, they would pass me when they started running again. Which was quite motivating :) and resist the temptation to overtake people at the start, especially if you've found you might be going too fast at the start of your runs.

I also use endomondo to give me updates every 5 minutes. This lets me know if I am going way too fast. E.g on my training runs I was going about 7.5km/hr at the start. On Saturday I did over 8, which I managed to continue, which was a dangerous plan.

Thank you for he tips, i will take them all onboard. I have a couple of days off coming up so will use them for the longer runs x

Also, I am tempted by the half but it might be too soon after Saturdays. I could do the 10k though... Will let you know if I decide to do it 😊

Well how did you get on Lisa 84? I was there and managed it in 1.02.

That's so weird, I done it in exactly the same time, we must have crossed the finish line together (if you were In the pink wave that is). I loved up every minute of it and can't wait to do the next one :) go us 😀

Oh Lisa I was in the green wave, you did a brilliant time for your first great Scottish run. Thinking of doing the 5k santa dash this year in Glasgow. Starts the same as the Great Scottish run.
