My first trail run (edition 2!)

Many thanks to everyone who advised me on trail running and shoes, today I did my first trail run! It was fab, I loved every minute!

The first pic is the start of the trail, I was a bit nervous about going in! The second pic is where it suddenly opened out, on a field of beautiful blue flowers, with Cordes just visible in the background It was very steep, about 100MTs elevation altogether, starting on grass, then soil and roots, the loose chalky stones. I managed to keep running all the way, albeit quite slowly in places. I even had enough left over for a sort of sprint finish when I got back down to the flat. I was grinning like a loon all the way home.

Lovely places, that area is really beautiful! Did you get trail shoes in the end ?

No, I just used my old faithful Mizunos. They were fine, but a couple of people said they prefer to feel the track beneath them, I felt like I could have done with a bit more padding!

I think that it ( like most everything else in life) is a matter of "balance" . If the soles are too "thin" then you stand the risk of hurting under your feet on trails - but if the shoe is too "supportive" then you lose your ability to feel what your feet are doing and react quickly enough to prevent things like ankle strains, etc. Taken to both extreme ends of the spectrum - in one case, imagine running barefoot on rocky trails - at the other end imagine running in a plaster foot cast !! :)

Yay! Welcome to the muddy side! You'll never look back (and your joints will thank you). I did a little trot along the top of Kinder Scout in Derbyshire yesterday and am all in love with running again as a result - springy peat and incredible views 😀. Can't be beat!
