Amazing how much harder just 30 seconds added on to running time is. Got a killer stitch at about 11 minutes this morning. Any advice on stitches anyone? I have no idea what even causes them :) . Still, managed 3.03Km according to my garmin so was happy with that as its my furthest yet.

Did you not hear Laura talk about stitches, and how to deal with them? Maybe you haven't got to the run where she talks about them. Its best not to eat for a couple of hours before you run, if you must have something then maybe just a banana or yoghurt and some water.

If you get a stich just breathe in slowly & deeply to the bottom of the stomach

I don't have Laura Dave, i don't have an mp3 player. So just running by my garmin for timing run/walks. My son is giving me his old iphone4 next week so no podcasts til week 3 for me. All i have before my run is a yoghurt drink and a cup of tea. I'll try that breathing technique. Cheers

Yes, some great tits there! lol

I have got the odd small stich, but gone off again quickly.

Home Remedies for Side Stitch

Stop or slow down. Then bend forward and push your fingers into the painful area. These actions will force the diaphragm to relax and ease the spasm by increasing blood flow.

Breathe deeply and exhale slowly. This should help relax the diaphragm.

Stretch the abdominal muscles. Reach overhead and hold your arms in this position until the stitch disappears.

Prevention

Don’t eat and run. If stitches seem to hit you after a meal, wait 30 to 90 minutes after eating before you exercise.

Before and during exercise, refrain from drinking concentrated fruit juices and beverages high in carbohydrates (such as added sugars).

well done...a and later in the programme ( I think its week 4) Laura gives some tits about getting rid of a stitch. Also, don't eat at least 2 hours before and especially not a hot curry ;)

Thanks , i run in the morning at 6 a.m. so no curry :) . I just have a cup of tea and a yoghurt drink. So i shouldnt be getting stitches til week 4 lol. God i'm so unfit :)

Yep it's week 4 Laura talks about stitch so you can't possibly be having it yet :) Slow down was the best advice I received at about your point. Also, I've been advised not to 'up' more than one aspect at a time so don't increase the amount of time you're running and at the same time try to increase your distance. I've stopped checking my distance now and just concentrate on increasing stamina through the longer run times.

Thats good advice Katy, i must admit i am a bit obsessed with trying to go a little further each time , even if its just .01km :) . I think i set off too fast and suffer for it later. My splits on the garmin are always alot slower at the end. Need to try and get my pace more steady.

If you want to go faster, I would do it at the end. Paula Radcliffe always talked of negative splits where she went faster in second half of race. Also, the time we are running isnt that long. It does take a km or two to warm up. So again you are probably better placed to do the extra 0.01km in second half.

Breathe in and out as if you're blowing up a balloon, from your tummy and not your chest. And slow down. You're maybe running too fast. Well done on getting to week 2!

yes my breathing is a bit short and fast rather than long and deep. I definitely need to get my pace more steady. Its a bit erratic at the moment. Thanks, for the encouragement, i'm determined to make it to week 9 and beyond :)

A wise man on here gave me the following advice when I was starting out... Drink plenty of water prior to going on your run keeping hydrated before a run will help and also plenty of stretches. I done both and found it really helped me. Good luck with the running

paulb67 profile image
paulb67Graduate in reply toJuliaM72

Thanks Julia, i'll give that a try rather than having a cup of tea before i set off. :)

Hey Paul 😊

well done on today, you do seem to be covering quite a big distance for week 2, have to send me the garmin splits to see!

6am early runs are good, I'm impressed, and when you get the talking podcasts all will become clear with laura, and no having to check times as she tells you when to stop, walk, jog its much better 😊

Dont think ive ever really had stitch so cant offer much advice there :(

Keep up the good work 😊

Cheers Ali. As you know i walk fast!. Comes with being an ex postman :) . So can't claim the distance is down to running ability. How do i send you the run details? Not up to speed with this technology yet. My runs are on garmin connect altho my last 2 should be on strava x
