Joe's first 5K

Just ran 5 km with my son, aged 11. His first 5K, and he came in at 26 minutes (me, 6 minutes behind - I kept looking for him and he was just a speck in the distance most of the time). He's so chuffed and keen to do his first Parkrun at the weekend :)

How wonderful (and wonderful to have 11 year old legs too

;)

I'm just really pleased both the kids have got interested too. I've seen on here how other people's families have been getting involved too. So good!

Oh that's really lovely. So nice to hear he is keen to do a park run. They run so well at a young age not a care in the world to hold them back.

I know. I would love to be able to do that!

Bless him! Fantastic, love it that everyone's kids are getting involved. Except my boy uses it as an excuse to raid the treats cupboard ("awwww but Muuuum, I did Parkrun!")

That's exactly what Joe did, and I had three chocolate digestives because of him (I wouldn't have touched them otherwise, honest!) How old's your son? Is he going to try out the new junior parkrun or stick with the big one?

He's 13, he likes running with his Dad so he'll probably stick with the Saturday. (Although last time he ducked out after one lap, a consequence of sitting around over the Easter Hols and not doing any exercise)!

He's going to love it ! and if you were only 6 minutes behind well done you too !

Well done both of you and welcome to my world :) My 8 year old did his first Parkrun in 27ish minutes and his second in 25:08. He doesn't even looked whacked afterwards!! I'm just reminding myself that thanks to C25k I can now beat my 5 year old and I couldn't say that in 2014 :) Glad to hear your daughter is still running too. It does absolute wonders for their general confidence and wellbeing. Another achievement to add to your C25k journey - getting your kids running too :)

Yes, I hope they stay interested, it's so good to see :) I'm hoping my son doesn't put my daughter off, though. He's all about full speed ahead and she's not!

Kids eh. I used to go on the odd run with my dad when I was 11/12 and used to be able to run 5 miles in 38 minutes! That's about 15 mins quicker than now, haha!

in reply to Wristy

Wow, that's so fast!!

How fantastic Gludwig! Lovely post and an enviable time yourself! My 11 yr old daughter has said she wants to do C25K and park run too! She has asthma, is a little heavy for her age/ height and has been suffering what the doctors are calling 'growing pains' in her legs/hips. She's been thoroughly checked over, xrayed etc. revealing no physical problems, So I've told her we'll do her C25K on my rest days and she can take it at whatever speed she wants - we'll even start with fast and gentle walking if we have to and then, every second week I will do park run with her, at her pace, and promise to cross the finish line after her:-) I'm really excited that my journey is inspiring her - finally, I'm setting a good example :-D. Just have to see if she remains enthused....

Brilliant! Best wishes and good luck with it :)

That's great. It's slow and steady with my daughter (12) too (just like me!) If we try and do too much too soon, I know she'll get put off, but she's been enjoying it so far. Me too. Apart from anything else, it's so nice to have that time together, isn't it? I really hope it continues. My daughter doesn't want to do parkrun, which is probably quite good for now as my son would just want to race her! We've signed up for race for life and the colour run together, which looks really fun and she's v excited about. Good luck to you two! x

That's lovely, photo of the fit family please!

This all sounds so brilliant - a complete family lifestyle change. Sounds like you all spur each other on, but in different ways, and you hold it all together. I was so unmotivated about exercise at that age (although I was pretty much glued to my bike...). I can't imagine voluntarily signing up to do a race. I even scived off P.E.!
