You'll hear this a lot, but I'm going to say it anyway... slow and steady, slow and steady, slow and steady. Trust the plan, many of us (me included) started off feeling like this but it's incredible how quickly your body adapts to the new things you're asking it to do. Keep with it and you'll be amazed how your fitness improves.
Slow an steady it is I agree it's like the diet too much too soon an your body crashes, this time I've decide I'm not dieting I'm not exercising I'm changing my lifestyle........
Brilliant TinaMay for making a start! It does get easier (and ever-so-slightly addictive) and I think most of us have started this from an unfit state, so no shame there at all. You are now one day fitter than you were and racing away from that couch!
In my, ahem, wiser years, I think post-run stretches are ESSENTIAL if I don't want people to think I walk like that because of some incontinence accident. Just a thought if your calves (and quads?) are supa-tight, treating them to a little stretching immediately after your warm-down walk is a good investment for the next day.
In addition to post-run stretches, I ice the bottoms of my feet for 20 minutes after a run (I have a product that we have in the USA called 'Icy Feet'). But you can use a bag of frozen peas, just do not put them against a bare foot and only do it for 20 minutes.
Each week will present a new challenge but you will be ready for it and can do it. Just have faith in Laura and she will get you there. You will look back and think wow I can't believe I am now doing x and back a few weeks ago week1 seemed so hard. Trust me I was shocked in week 1, I am sure a minute wasn't that long now i am aiming to run 10km.
Everyone has said it but I cannot stress it enough. RUN SLOWER. When you think you might be running slower than you walk, SLOW DOWN even more. And just when you think that there might be snails moving faster than you, SLOW DOWN more. Trust me on this. The feeling you get from sticking to the running times in the plan as opposed to having to stop and walk part of the running times? NOTHING compares to it. Nothing at all. Speed and endurance will come. I promise.
Don't you dare feel embarrassed. Dude! You're RUNNING. You got through W1D1.How on earth is that something to be embarrassed about?!
And lastly? Stretch, stretch, stretch. Don't skip stretching. Don't do it half-heartedly. It takes time for your body to get used to running. But stretching will help prevent injury.
Good luck and welcome to the program that will change your life!
Hi TinaMay and welcome. Well done for doing the really hard part and getting out of the front door and completing your first run Yes it does get easier as you get fitter and stronger.
If your calves are really tight I would suggest you try stretches like the ones suggested at nhs.uk/Conditions/heel-pain... which will help your calf muscles ... honestly 'cos I was there 2 years ago!
I'm so please by all the positive response, especially right now as I'm in agony. Rest tomorrow then give it another go, have to keep going other wise every time I try it will pain me x.
Cheers guys hope I can too offer the support back sometime x
Well done: you have definitely done by far the hardest bit by getting out there for W1R1 and committing to a wonderful programme! It definitely isn't easy-peasy, but whatever was that could give such a sense of achievement? Follow the advice of Laura and the experienced runners on here and you will see yourself making progress week on week. I am still overweight and incredibly slow but have had so much support from the lovely people on here. A couple of months ago running for 60secs made me feel absolutely terrible, and for my last couple of runs I have managed 25 mins without stopping (not at all elegantly but still moving in such a way that I was definitely jogging and not walking!) Good luck....!
