I had a bad run. There's no denying it. My FIRST ever bad run in over 30 - since starting C25K and graduating. Alas, I realise that these things happen on occasion so I'm not too peed off about it. I can only blame a rather cheeky bottle of Beaujolais that I devoured last night whilst my wife and I barbecued various meats. This warm weather is lovely and it's gorgeous to be able to sit in the garden with some candles lit and eat al fresco. These conditions aren't that conducive to having a great run the next day though......
I thought I'd try out Laura's C25K+ Stepping Stone poddy this morning. This is my first post graduation venture into the "others side" so I was keen to see what sort of run it would be. Started off ok, running at 158bpm which is just about my usual running pace. Ten mins of that and I started to ask myself questions -
"Will my legs make it?" / "What does upping the pace a knotch mean?" / "Can I run 35 mins?"
Laura cooed in my ear "It's time to up the pace to 160bpm". It wasn't too bad actually, but as I ran my legs started to feel heavy. My right thigh especially was beginning to weigh as much as my entire body! I carried on until I just HAD to stop for a walk break. Lauras 160bpm music kept pumping into my ears as my crestfallen self walked along like a knackered tortoise.
Started running again after 30 secs and was maintaining the pace, even uphill! However about another kilometre on, I had to give up. I thought "Sod this! I can't run another inch. But at least I'm still moving". Laura told me "you're doing reeeeally well" (if only she knew!) and there was another "X" amount of minutes to go. I tried one last time to run JUST as Laura wound up the bpm to 165 for the last 5 minutes!!! "Forget it baby!" I said. "I'm as tired as an exhausted sloth who's just won an exhausted sloth competition."
Walked home with my tail betwixt my legs, but thought that at least I'd gone out there and got my heart rate up, I sweated off some calories and generally made myself a tiny bit fitter.
So not all bad then........
