I have been breathless for ages now and yes I’m a smoker. I’m also a very anxious person as suffer with bad anxiety. Anyway I saw the nurse today and ECG was fine but spirometry tests inconclusive as last test I had run out of puff . Next on the list is chest X-ray. A couple of years ago a chest X-ray showed some signs of emphysema but I still carried on smoking stupid I no but I enjoy them. But lately I’ve been so worried about my lungs that’s why I got checked out. I’ve been prescribed the Respimat soft mist inhaler but I’m very anti any type of medication as they always make me feel ill. Has anyone used this inhaler and are there any nasty side effects as I am very concerned about using it when I get it. I’ve tried researching this but I cannot find out much and now it’s making me anxious as worrying about it too much. Thanks

Respimat soft Mist Inhaler
I use the Spiriva Respimat. No side effects. I'm sure Spiriva has a website you could check out.
Thank you mlej i will check it out.
I continued smoking for awhile after a diagnosis of copd/emphysema, but finally managed to quit. I'd be more worried about the side effects of sucking tobacco smoke into your lungs instead of a medicine to counter those side effects. If you do quit..the lung function goes down slower, if you don't it is a lot faster down that hill.
Well done on quitting smoking Schmicter and yes i totally agree with you that smoking is worse for the lungs than medication. I just hate side effects of meds as i always seem to get them. I am trying to quit smoking as i have my nicotine patches at the ready now and i have the stop smoking ear magnet on at this very moment. So hopefully i will be smoke free sooner rather than later.
Great decision, and keep at it. I think anyone can quit once they decide to. You will notice the difference in your breathing or wheezing in a matter of days. That feeling will make any other minor side effects worth it...it seems taking breathing for granted is easy for smokers....myself included for most of my life. Don't hold back on using nrt if you need them, even gum or lozenges with the patches at times can get you over it.
There is a Spiriva respimat and inspiolto repimat and perhaps others . Do you know which one you gave?
Hi jackdup,
No im waiting for it to be delivered so unsure of which one. Trouble is i haven't been told i have copd or anything really. I know i had early signs of emphysema on chest x-ray a couple of years ago and now waiting for another x-ray. I am sure i wont be prescribed anything too strong as its mainly for breathlessness and anxiety as i couldn't complete my spirometry tests properly as run out of puff on the last one. I hope im prescribed something that is safe and without all the horrible side effects as I've had to many medications that have made me ill that its put me off taking anything now. I will update when i know what one im given.
I'm on Combivent Respimat which is rescue inhaler, it is albuterol and Atrovent together, I've had no problems with it.
Thanks Lorbic,
Im not sure what im getting but the Nurse said the Respimat soft mist inhaler which i am to take 2 puffs once a day then a rescue inhaler encase there are times when i need that bit of extra help. All confusing to me. Hope i get what you have if you have had no problems with it. I was going to just have a rescue inhaler but she said i didn't have enough suck on it .Weird.
Hi Mandie, if you don't have enough suck for a resuce inhaler then you need to be put on nebulizer treatments, like they use in the hospital. It is a mist that you breath in. Also when you use an inhaler you need to use a spacer as that helps get the medicine into the lungs better. Let me know what you get, anxious to know.
Hi LORBIC,
I have only just received my inhalers and i thought i needed to take the Spiriva respimat through the aero chamber turns out its for the rescue inhaler ( I think ) anyway i have been prescribed Spiriva Respimat and Salamol Salbutamol inhaler. Im tempted to research the Salamol inhaler but i have to trust the doctors otherwise i know i will read something that i wish i hadn't.
Spacer? Will the pharmacy have them?
Thank you in advance!
Carolyn
better quit smokng, the next med you'll be on is oxygen
Still waiting for my inhaler as nurse forgot to write up the prescription. Had phone call this morning and being prescribed Spiriva respimat with aero chamber. I have built myself up into a panic as read about terrible side effects even death. I know i shouldn't read and believe everything but is this a safe inhaler.
I've been on spiriva for a long time now and have never had any bad side effects except for dry mouth. It works well for me. You should be fine. Talk to your Dr about your concerns if your really worried of course. Good luck
Thanks Jensmom,
So pleased Spiriva has worked for you. I read to much on the internet which puts me off any medication but reading your post has helped me a lot so I will give it a try.
Hello Mandie4711
I have been using Respimat mist for several years and never had a problem, it does help and only use it once a say.
I don’t think you really have to worry about this inhaler and why not give it a good try! You may find you can breathe better.
God Bless and good luck
Thank you Madonnalee,
I took it last week and felt ok but then accidentally missed one day. Then next day I took it again but felt really chesty but don’t no if it was the Spiriva or not as today I feel a little under the weather. I will try taking it again tomorrow see how I get on.
I use Combivent Respimat, don't use more then doctor tells you too, it has albuterol in it and too much of any albuterol inhaler will make your heart race
I use Combivent Respimat, and have good results from it. Been using it for over a year now.
