FIT and Feacal Calprotectin

Hi. Hoping someone can ease my nerves as I feel sick and cannot sleep due to worry.

I am a 30 year old female with 3 children aged 9, 6 and 1. I did a FIT test due to seeing blood on the tissue when I wiped a couple of weeks ago. I don’t poo very often (once or twice a week). And tmi but my poo was quite big and hurt when it came out which is what I put the blood down to. FIT test came back as 30ug so 2ww referral put in for suspected corolectal cancer. Also did the fecal cal protection test and that has come as high as well with a result of 136ug.

bloods all normal apart from slightly low ferritin levels, still just in normal range but on the low side. I have always suffered with this and never really come to a conclusion for it.

please could someone try and reassure me of what could cause both stool samples to be abnormal as all I keep thinking is I’ve got cancer and it’s my worst scariest nightmare. Currently waiting to hear from hospital regarding my 2 week referral for colonoscopy. Thank you.

Ive had iron deficiency for nearly 10 Years but no real cause found. The colonoscopy and other endoscopy detected diverticulitis and gastritis. I too believed i had BC Because of pain and weight loss but it could be many things. My qfit and calprotectin was 3 and 12 which is not high Your colonoscopy may point to something but you need answers. Best wishes.

Hi, I like you had blood in my poo. I did not do a fit test but my GP referred me for a colonoscopy. I suffer from hard stools and passing one can be painful. The result was a internal pil, .nothing else. I now try to eat more fibre and drink more fluid. I'm 55 yrs. If bloods ok, ie not aneamic, no weight loss it could be something simple like that or a internal fissure which causes quite a lot if blood. Try not to stree to much, easier said than done. The colonoscopy I was dreading but I was fine, I watched whole thing. The prep tastes awful but just put orange squash in it . I think with you age it will be nothing serious.

wait for the colonoscopy, take the prep slowly( brilliant advice from experienced patients) accept the sedation it really is ok, stay close to a loo!

I understand your fear. My story was similar. Colonoscopy was clean. There was even a sign of thin stools. It was very scary. I don't think it's medical advice, but I think it could be internal hemorrhoids or anal fissure. Make sure you have a colonoscopy

Hi Rbbre2415182724,

Thanks for posting with us. First, congratulations on the little ones. I hope they’re all doing well, and I know you’re a busy woman😯❤️.

I am glad to hear you are going to have a colonoscopy because that will get you the answers you’re looking for. You should know that your symptoms could be caused by many different things. You have gotten some great responses from others on this site as well.

Did your doctor really say that the referral put in was for “suspected colon cancer”? I personally think that’s jumping the gun. I think that given your symptoms of blood in the stool most certainly needs to be checked out and you are doing that, I don’t believe that “colorectal cancer” should have been mentioned in the same sentence. And you can see from the responses you’re getting here that there can be a lot of different things causing your symptoms. I think that one comment may be driving your anxiety a bit.

Getting back to the colonoscopy. That will get you some good answers and you won’t have to speculate as to what’s going on. The colonoscopy is the gold standard at figuring out any gastro issues you may be experiencing. I get an annual colonoscopy as a part of my surveillance given my history of colon cancer. I have a hereditary form of colon cancer, so they watch me closely. Catching things early is absolutely beneficial and I see you are doing that as well.

Colonoscopy tips: Make sure you do the “prep” properly. That’s absolutely key to a successful colonoscopy. You will be given a set of instructions and a time frame for which to do things. I always move that time frame up an hour to an hour and a half on both the day before and the day of the procedure. The prep is meant to “clean you out” and that’s exactly what it will do. Moving the timeline up will let you get a good night’s sleep and not having to worry about finding the bathroom. And on the day of the procedure, you will be over the hurry to go to the bathroom and can focus on having the procedure. I actually look forward to the procedure. My anesthesia drug is called Propofol. I find it to be very relaxing. I would even say it’s the best feeling of relaxation you can imagine. I do get completely knocked out so I am not viewing the procedure, but as you can see others don’t do that and actually watch the procedure. It’s all up to you. I choose to not watch.

I do wish you the best and getting your colonoscopy and getting the answers you’re looking for. And please know what you're experiencing can be caused by many different things. You just need to get them narrowed down to what’s going on for you. The colonoscopy can make that happen. Please let us know what you find out. It's that type of information that can be helpful to others on this site.

Thank you,

hey I had a reading of 30 in my FIT test also. I had to wait a month for the colonoscopy which was a nightmare so I completely understand your anxieties. Everything turned out to be fine and the doc put it down to IBS. He knew how anxious I was and before going in to the colonoscopy he told me with such a low reading it’s highly unlikely that it’s anything sinister. Keep thinking positive!

hi all, just an update. So Bowel specialist nurse called me last week and even though all my test results came back abnormal she said due to my age she won’t offer me a colonoscopy! I was so so upset. She said that she thinks it’s chronic constipation as I only go to the toilet once to twice a week. I told her this is normal for me and it’s always been that way but she wouldn’t have it and told me to take regular laxatives. I told her how much this has affected my mental health and I don’t think it’s fair to say “I’m too young” as age is just a number and anyone can get cancer or other issues. She is speaking to her consultant today to see if they can offer me colonoscopy because I’m requesting it but she said not to be too hopeful.

I can’t carry on like this. If they don’t offer me colonoscopy because “I’m too young to have cancer”. What do I do??

I can’t keep waiting, not knowing.

She didn’t even mention my anaemia or cal protection test. I can’t see how all that can be down to consstipation. Especially when I don’t even feel constipated and go to the toilet easy when I need to go.

Still going out of my mind here 😩
